Items and Polymorph

Are they appropriate for his new body? Probably not; thus, they meld. You could argue that he can keep them in saddlebags or something, but then he'd have to have the saddlebags on him at the time of his transformation.

Well, technically, a slotless item like a stone of good luck is appropraite for every form. How is a stone that you don't have to have in any particular slot, more or less appropriate for a different body shape?

I think a better arguement, and what you may have been getting at, is are the clothing/storage gear used to hold the item appropriate for the new form? If the stone was made into a pendant that hung around the neck, this may still be appropriate for forms that have necks.

This might be pedantic, but it's not appropriate if he doesn't have the means to equip it, right? It's only effectively "equipped" as long as you carry it somehow. If you have an unactivated ioun stone sitting on the floor at your feet, you don't have it equipped and don't benefit from it. If you have a luckstone sitting on the floor at your feet, you don't have it equipped and don't benefit from it. It's got to be in your possession to count as being equipped.

Agreed, but does body shape prohibit posession?

Most other magical clothing - cloaks, hats, boots, rings, etc. - resize.

The DMG says items should 'resize or be easily adapted' in the section about found treasure. It in no way sugests that the resize instantaneously, as they would need to to be usable in the new form for polymorph.

IMO, if you change size during polymorph, everything you are wearing get absorbed.

I am also leaning towards this way of think except for custom made items. However, if you take the master transmogrifist examples from complete arcane a ring of protection and an amulet of mighty fists are maintained in all forms including large forms - even in ochre jelly form which is certainly pushing the boundaries somewhat IMO
