Let's say Bob the Fighter is a somewhat-charismatic character that wants to have an Uber-High Handle Animal skill (or any other Charisma-based skill), and he's got some money to do it.
First, let's say he buys an item to give him a flat-out Competence bonus to Handle Animal (say, like, a "Bridle of Animal Handling +5"). Okay, that works.
Then, he buys a Cloak of Charisma +4. Those two stack, of course, because the enhancement bonus to charisma affects his charisma score (and thus, no actual bonus is being given to his Handle Animal score, just to his Charisma... you get the point). But here's the next question.
Then, he finds a Circlet of Persuasion in a treasure pile, and the rest of his party consists of an Elven Wizard, a Half-Orc Barbarian, and a Dwarven Rogue who focuses on trapfinding. (He's got no Cleric, because nobody likes Clerics.) So none of them really have an interest in Charisma-based skills, so Bob takes the Circlet. How does it react to his other items?
I can't remember offhand whether the Circlet grants an Enhancement bonus or a Competence bonus (as I don't have my books or the SRD handy), but for either, would it stack? It grants the aforemented-yet-unknown bonus to all Charisma-based checks, but doesn't grant it to your actual Charisma score or to a skill in particular. Would this stack with a Cloak of Charisma AND a Bridle of Animal Handling?
On a related subject (although this next part should probably be a new topic on the House Rules forum, but I don't feel like making a new topic at the moment), has anybody thought of other items along the same line of the Circlet of Persuasion (that is, other items that simply grant a bonus to all skills that use a common ability score)? Like, for example, Armbands of Brutishness that grant a +3 bonus to Strength-based skill checks? Or a Ring of Quickness that grants such a bonus to Dexterity-based skill checks? Or even Glasses of Book-Knowledge that gives a bonus on all Intelligence-based skill checks? Anyone interested? Any thoughts? At all? Beuler? Beuler?
