It's coming! My First DM time!

GMing can be hard. Don't give up. If you get stuck or just lose it, casually take a bathroom break or stroll to the kitchen to get a drink. Don't sit and stare at the players like a deer in the headlights.

If you've got a clear mental picture, they'll have a clearer picture. If you can't see what's going on in your head, take a second to visualise things, and have fun!

I'd say good luck. But there's something far more important: Have confidence that what you do is fun. Don't balk at critique, but a DM that doubts himself will bring that into the game, and that's no fun.

On the other hand, it's a cool DM philosophy to "just say yes." Not to beer - tipsy DMs are a baaaad thing - but to players.

Player: "Can I swing from that chandelier and crash into the bad guy, tripping him?

Sad DM: "No."

Happy DM: "You can try! I don't know the rules for that, but it's cool, so if you make a jump check I'll give you +2 to hit as if you were charging. Then roll your trip attack like it is in the book."
This is the best advice I've heard over the years, and the best advice I've ever tried to take to heart in my games. Too many DMs "just say NO" and shoot down the players.

Kudos on an excellent recommendation.

Dm'ing is an interesting experience, especially with experienced dm's, listen to any tips they give you, but remember it is your game, and don't let yourself get bullied into changing it into their game. Remember to keep it fun and interesting for all of you, and remember the first rule of dm'ing, expect the unexpected from the players, because it WILL happen.
