When I was in the Navy (c. late '77) I was assigned to a decommissioning crew. The sailors would sit with fire extinguishers while civilian crew would take apart a ship. It is intensely boring and not everyone was needed every day.
I didn't want to get involved in the "Do we watch soaps, talks shows or cartoons?" argument so I read "War and Peace". That got some comments like "I can't believe you're reading that for
fun."
It actually was fun, especially if you look at it like a soap opera. Also, I recommend you get a list of the characters and who they are - it helps at the beginning.
After I finished that I bought a small white box with three tan books...

Folks didn't notice that nearly as much as "War and Peace". Those comments were along the lines of,
"What's that?"
"A game."
"Game? where's the board?"
"No board, you play it with paper and dice."
"What's it about?"
"You fight dragons."
"....oh." turning away, "Hey, I thought we were watching cartoons now!"
