"Its so big!"

For me it was in the eigth grade. I had brought in Battlefield Earth to read after finishing my achievement tests. Lots of ooo's and ahh's including a few from my teachers.

I didn't get a nickname though.

I must be reading this wrong. People who are studying for their doctorates in English or teaching the same are impressed by the PHB itself? ;)
No, they're impressed that I have time to be reading the PHB while they're running around trying to keep their heads above water :D

I think it was 8th grade when I started reading The Stand (the unabridged version.) My classmates, who'd become used to my bookwormishness, became impressed all over again.

I also got a few looks when, in a different school a few years later, I brought Lucifer's Hammer to read during finals.

Cool. :)

Has anyone here ever read a book called Ribofunk by Paul Di Fillipo?

When I was in the Navy (c. late '77) I was assigned to a decommissioning crew. The sailors would sit with fire extinguishers while civilian crew would take apart a ship. It is intensely boring and not everyone was needed every day.

I didn't want to get involved in the "Do we watch soaps, talks shows or cartoons?" argument so I read "War and Peace". That got some comments like "I can't believe you're reading that for fun."

It actually was fun, especially if you look at it like a soap opera. Also, I recommend you get a list of the characters and who they are - it helps at the beginning.

After I finished that I bought a small white box with three tan books... ;) Folks didn't notice that nearly as much as "War and Peace". Those comments were along the lines of,

"What's that?"
"A game."
"Game? where's the board?"
"No board, you play it with paper and dice."
"What's it about?"
"You fight dragons."
"....oh." turning away, "Hey, I thought we were watching cartoons now!"
