"Its so big!"

Okay, tis is a bit of a silly topic, but does anyone get a certain satisfaction from whipping out a really big book to read in front of some people? Maybe it is just where I live, but the quote is sort of the general reaction sometimes. :)

When I was in third grade - oh, so many years ago. Actually 10 - I brought a King Arthur book to school and sat there and read it and kinda freaked out all the kids. Pretty fun, and they thought I was brilliant.

You know, I actually get that reaction from time to time myself. It's kind of funny, because I've never understood it. If the book is good, who cares how big it is?

"size matters not! judge me by my size, do you?"

Okay, obligatory Yoda quote aside, you're right, people do react that way. Non-readers in particular. As if the bigger the book is, the more difficult it is or the larger your brain must be to comprehend it.

Oh well ... at least it's a sure-fire way to convince lesser humans of your impressive intelligence, be it true or not, without needing to make an effort beyond lifting a collection of bound tree-pulp :P

I get similar looks reading a book with Chinese or Japanese on the cover. Of course I have no idea how to read either. Translations rule.

Hai, sou da yo!

I would get that reaction whenever someone would see me reading my hardcover, leatherette volume of "Lord of the Rings." Often "That's a big book" was followed by "Is that a bible?"

Case in point - the large format Legends of Dune books. They're huge. Not exactly a demanding read, though. I was reading them on the bus to and from work.

Very heavy.
