First Post
I'm currently running Expedition to Castle Ravenloft for 3 of my friends. I had some questions about the adventure that weren't answered by the book, so I started a thread in this forum to ask you guys my questions. Here's the link to that thread, which contains spoilers, so don't read it if you don't want them: http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=190679

One of my players regularly reads these forums, but never posts. I knew that he would probably see the thread, so I emailed him and told him not to read it, because it gives away stuff in the game that he's not supposed to know. He got the email and he still read it, and it really irritates me. Really.

I randomly got a chance to talk to him, and he knows how pissed I am. He simply doesn't care that I'm pissed. All he had to say about it was "I didn't know you would take offense." and "I still want to play, and my character won't act any differently." He did not say that he was sorry.

This irritates me for many reasons, which I'll quickly list: invasion of privacy, seems like cheating, trust in him as a player is gone, he has no remorse, he doesn't respect my wishes, he didn't pay a single dime for the adventure... I'm considering booting him out of the game, but he's a good friend and I don't want to do that, but I might.

I guess what I want to know is this: how would you, as a DM, react to this? Am I over-reacting? What would you DO about it if this happened to you?

The only other thing worth pointing out is that I don't need anybody telling me "Dude, they're players, and you're the DM... its you vs. them, baby! Any edge they can get, they SHOULD get. They're players - they've done dumber stuff before. Besides, what did you expect? Them to NOT read it, especially when you pointed them to it? Unrealistic. they're PLAYERS!"

Addressing the above, I don't run my games that way, and yes, I expected them to not read it. Its no different that them flipping through the book itself.

Thanks for your time, and help.

Ya, I'd be pissed too. If he really enjoys playing then I'd ask him to not come to one of the sessions assuming that won't mess things up for everyone else. Tell him you want a week without him to calm down and hopefully that will register with him that you are upset with him.

I know this isnt' the best choice, but...

Stop running the adventure entirely. Tell the players that you cannot, in good faith, continue with the plot you had because one of them read privileged information, and you cannot trust that he won't use that to gain an advantage or skirt around an important plot element. Tell them (as a group) that you're sorry they won't get to play in this really great adventure, but that you have another one (assuming you do) that they can all start on instead.

I had to do this once when I had a player that kept reading modules behind my back. He never did it again, because the entire group threatened to kick him out of the party if he tried.

Life is Short

Did he read your thread before you e-mailed him?

If so, you have room to talk. Otherwise, he's a traitor and you should flush him.

I gotta (contingently) agree with Luthien. This is your best option, IF your main goal is to keep the party of three together.

On the other hand, if your main goal is to run EtCR, I'd kick the bum out.

Finally, if your goal is to add drama to the game any way that you can, I'd recommend letting the pcs decide which way to go, with the 'cheater' pc only getting to vote if there is a tie (i.e. one of the other players votes to kick him and the other votes to kick the module).

No. I actually didn't email him, I emailed a friend of ours that's also in the game, and told that person to tell this other guy, which he did. The guy immediately went and read the thread in question. I pointed him out specifically because he's the only one of us (other than myself) who frequents these boards.

That really sucks. It sounds like you just can't trust this guy, so I'd leave him out for this adventure. Furthermore, I'd hesitate to take him on for any future ones.
