I've Seen the New D&D Minis

Just got back from the game store and the owner had a single Entry Pack they sent him so he could see what was inside and drum up interest in it. So we cracked it open and took a look inside.

The initial impression: Very nice. I'll be picking up at least one of these, then probably waiting for the figures to make appearances at the comics stores so I can get the individual ones I really need.

The figures look nice, too. Not as good (of course) as the convention and trade show photos we're seen so far, but certainly passable. Some are better than others (the troll was particularly good, as was a fighter figure). They come wrapped in individual plastic packs, whick keeps the various bits from interacting and possibly tangling. There was some bending and 'drift' (where the figure leans a little on the base) but nothing that could not be easily fixed. Detail varied in the paint jobs but the indivual figures themselves are quite nice.

There was a good mix in the box we saw. Humans, a troll, a hell hound, an undead, a dwarf and Lidda. Regdar too, I think. Some humanoids. A gobin sneak and a kobold (very nicely done, too).

The 'dungeon tiles' that come with the pack are a good addition. Individual rooms and (unfortunately) only one 'corridor' map (but then, this isn't meant to be a full scale build your own dungeon thing). Nice and sturdy. There was some writing on the tiles while could be ignored.

Also, you get a nice fold out battlemat with some common templates on the other side for photocopying. I'd have prefered they be on individual sheets of paper, since getting that battlemat over a copier isn't going to be easy.

You get character cards, some counters, the skirmish rules (with lots of illustrations on facing, cover, etc), plus more.

Overall quick impression: I'll probably pick it up. It was good to finally see and touch the minis and see for myself what the paintjobs were like. They're much better than first round WizKids paint jobs were, and I suspect they'll improve with time.

Good to hear. I wil probably pick up a starter kit, but I know I will buy a booster pack or 2. If I like the figs, then I will get the started kit.

I'm still put off by the collectible aspect. I understand the economics of it all, but I really don't like collectibles. Once the secondary market springs up on eBay, maybe I'll have to take a look.

I love the collectible aspect of it for two reasons: one, I don't have to paint anything to have lots of nice, colorful minis, and two, I can collect tons of monster minis (for PCs I prefer painted Dark Heaven figs). I'm not discriminate; I won't mind at all to keep getting the commons over and over. I will add them to my monster army, and one day when I have twenty-five or thirty-two kobold commons I might just drop them on my players all at once. :D

I want painted monster minis but I don't have a lot of time to paint, so for me the whole idea is win/win.

I have three of the Gencon promo minis (Orc Archer, Lizardman, and Elf Ranger), and they are not to scale with any of my Reaper miniatures. In fact, a Reaper Elf when compared to the D&D Elf Ranger looks like a giant. Most people won't be bothered by it, but the really look funny standing next to each other on my Dwarven Forge Master Maze stuff.

The Reaper Minis are around 28mm I believe, which is why they look so huge.

I've heard that they're size comparable to Ral Partha miniatures, which means that my fairly large Ral Partha collection just became useful, again (As did, incidentally, the Iron Wind Metals, which puts out a lot of the old Ral Partha miniatures, though unfortunately, not the D&D specific ones as far as I know :( ).

As for size issues, well, elves are supposed to be pretty small. Besides, on the plus side, I've always wanted to play a really tall human but have never found an accurate miniature to represent that which I liked. Now I can grab any old Reaper figure and it'll be huge in comparison to the D&D Miniatures, which means I can have my 6'5" human, now. :D

I seem to recall that a lot of "25mm" figures crept slowly up to 28mm over the years. Sounds like the D&D figs are truly 25mm.

That explains why the halflings and kobolds looked so small, though...

Hmmm, just checked my pre-order at Amazon. It still says it will ship on the 8th and be delivered on the 10th or 11th, even though they haven't shipped yet.
