D&D 5E (2014) Jack of All Trades Question - Bard Question

This ability says it allows the bard to apply half of their proficiency bonus to any skill they are not trained in. I don't have my books in front of me at the moment and I'm wondering if this also applies to tools like Thieves tools or medicine kits?

It applies to "ability checks".

Thieves tools and medical kits use Dex and Wis respectively, so yes.

Also works on initiative.
