January 2007 MacWorld Expo

It's possible, but unlikely that you might see a quad core 2 duo iMac announced at the expo, since the chips are scheduled to be announced at CES show the same week. But given that the iMacs were reved only about 2-3 months ago and the heat/power requirements of the quad core chips, it's unlikely that you will see any major changes. The 24" iMac does use a non-user upgradeable video card, so it is concievable that part of the machine might see a bump, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Still it's only 4 days off so it is wise to wait until then.

I'm not actually holding out for a quad-core. I'm hoping for a slight processor speed bump and, hopefully, a 2GB RAM config like they did with the MBP. I know the iMac isn't high-end, but I'm hoping they at least stock the 24" with more RAM. And maybe a larger hard drive. Stuff like that.

Well the big news is the iPhone/Widescreen iPod/Portable internet. I discounted the internet aspect in my initial version of the post, but after looking over the material on Apple's web site, I think this may have been a mistake. At least if the rigged demo is any guide, this may be the first device that has a good enough screen and interface to give you full fledged web browsing and email on a hand held device, comparable to what you'd get from a computer. The only other hardware announcement was the previously announced Apple (i) TV which is essentially a wireless media hub to stream your computer video/audio material through.

No computer hardware announcements, though I wouldn't be surprised if there were some as the Expo went on. I find it hard to believe that they aren't going to at least announce a quad core version of the Mac Pro, but Steve has buffaloed us before.

Edit: I think I may know how they are getting around Cisco/Linksys having the iPhone trademark. It's going to be called the (apple symbol) iPhone!

Wow. I want that thing right now! My wallet's telling me to wait until the price gets knocked down a hundred or two, and for my Verizon contract to expire. Stupid wallet.

As for the trademark, I imagine they'll just buy it from Cisco. It'll be worth it for both parties--Cisco's iPhone would otherwise be forever confused with Apple's product, but instead they could just get the cash and think of a new name. And Apple obviously can't back off the name now.

I really liked the phone, and I need to upgrade mine, but I think they lost me on the price. Just too expensive.

And I really wanted a refresh on the iMacs, since I'm about to get one. Here's to hoping the announce some computer upgrades later this week.

Well think of the phone as a Phone + iPod Nano, the price is more reasonable, though still not inexpensive. Though I did pay like $300 for my Razr when it was new.

My big question about the phone though is

How the hell are they going to keep fingerprints/skin oils off of the dammed thing!

I mean that's one of the biggest problems I have with my Razr and PSP....
