I had an average group of six. Zenith Starling the Grey Vengeance Paladin 6 human. Calypso Enhancement wizard 5 elf. Dagon Fighter. Christoff Tempest Cleric 5 human. Gabriel Assassin 5 Human. Athena Glamour Bard 5. Sir Roland Cloudcrest Cavalier 5 human.

Welcome to AL Gabriel.

Having found Gabriel and Athena passed out in the Sleeping Giant Inn, the group drags them to their room to recruit them. Five minutes later Sister Garele arrives shouting.

Sister Garele, “STABLE BOY! I didn’t sleep a wink last night. The gods were in my dreams. Tymora demands you roll the dice for a boon. Get to the shire roll the dice, and I going to crack open a cold one after this.” The god is generous to most gifting them with a mixture of healing potions, cold weather gear, or both. The group sets out to Dragon Burrow.

Athena, “It is nice cousin we are going to visited grandma’s crypt. She killed dragon there a few days ago.”

Sir Roland, “Days. It thought was two centuries ago.”

Calypso, “Days, Weeks, Decades. Time blurs when you are on elf time.”

Voice, “explains why some players are late to the table.”

Arriving at the top of the burrow, the new rogue finds the secret door and plate mail before age goes down first. Mumbles of single file death traps are ignored. They enter the circle hallway and ignore three lit hallways and enter the dark one. The rogue sneaks into the crypt and disarms the trap on the coffin. And disarms the second.

Moving into the north hallway the rogue tries to back stab the torch bearer who morphs into a will of wisp. The group tag team in and out on the fight and move into the second crypt proper. Sir Roland finds Grandma coffin and the lid flies off. Grandma is tick off her grandkids did not remember her birthday. But the kids don’t care. Claiming the sword, they rest for the night and move on. Two days later as they are climbing into freezing cold, Calypso takes off her ring of cold resistance and gives to her cousin.

DM Mumbles.

Arriving at the stables of the first castle, there are four horses there. They have been stabled for about eight hours. The group goes on alert status and Sir Roland takes the lead. Opening the door to the bastion Ms. Wintermoon is waiting.

Sir Roland, “Oh more staff. Is Cryovain waiting on us. We here to give him his just due and rewards. And how long have you been working for him?”

Ms. Wintermoon, “A month. And.”

Sir Roland, “We been working with him longer than that.” DM, “Yes 10 more days.” The group bluffs the veterans and move onto to bridge and into the second castle. The striges are speed bump and they explore the two lower floors of the castle. They loot the rooms and move to the top floor with the huge patio. Looking outside in a far corner of the open air patio is the horde which is iced covered. Dust of disappearance is used and everyone gets the invisible condition.

The group slowly moves across the patio and most make to horde. Suddenly the young white dragon breaths on the group and the real fight begins. The group slips and slides but don’t slide off the edge.

Calypso, “Well if you going to save against all my intelligence spells. FIREBALL.”

DM, “2.”

The burned body of the dragon crashes down on the bridge and bounces off. Seeing the boss die, the veterans take all the horses and leave. The group return to Phandalin and become members of the Harpers.

DM Notes. Oops I thought most of you were level 6. Oops it should have been difficult terrain and slippery.

End of session 615.

Dragon of Icespire Peak Review

After play review using Adventure League Rules 15.2 plus. Using 2024 rules and some 2014 books.

TLDR 5 stars but things will need to be adjusted for 2024 rules.

I bought this way back in 2019 on sale but only recently got around to running for a local FLGS. My players were most new to either 2024 rules. Or new to Adventure League (WOTC house rules). It ran 10 sessions. And due to being in a FLGS time sometime played into encounters.

The box set has basic rules, and adventure book. Some cards which include quests, sidekicks, magic items, and other stuff. And a dm screen which I didn’t use as I don’t use them and some of the information was out of date.

Back to Phandalin again. Phandalin is WOTC small town quest location which they have used three times. I use previous play throughs of the town to flesh it out. The town is bared bones with only six locations mentioned. The mayor as quest giver is fun idea.

The cards are great props for new dms but I would sort by type and drop them into a Ziploc instead of using the included box.

Most of the quests are basic go there and solve the problem or explore. And not all quests have a card associated with them. So you will need to do some prop work for some quests.

The dragon location is a nice bit of randomized chaos where a d20 is rolled on arriving or leaving a location. This can be fun but the dragon may appear too early and too powerful if the roll equals the pc location when they are too low of level to fight it. So use your judgement on how and when the dragon fights.

No guidance is given on adjusting fights if the party is too strong or weak. So brand new dms will need to hit the net for that.

Pros. Good price for your value and a baseline campaign for new players.

Cons. No hand holding for the dm. And lots of magic items are given out.

With the new 2024 starter set being release at of this writing, this is still a great beginning campaign or gift to your DM.
