Hmm... is there anything else in the initial description that suggests how the fish died?

1. Is there anything in the aquarium?

Yes.

A Cloud Giant outside with a case of uncontrollable flatulence followed through.

The resulting projectile flew through the window, smashed the aquarium and poor lil Romeo 'n' Juliet fell to the ground and suffocated. :p

Yes - read it once again through.

You are very close - too close for giving another hint.

Are their any other animals inside the room or were their any other animals in the room just prior to the breaking of the aquarium?

No. Only the human owner, who left that room with the aquarium intact.

I've heard a variation on this riddle where the aquarium was knocked over by another animal, but there's nothing to suggest that in the initial description given (if that is the answer, then this isn't technically a riddle).

The aquarium was turned over by a gust of wind. That's the only answer that I can come up with - it explains the fish being in the middle of the room (which I deduce is away from the aquarium, as it's on a dresser, which is an item of furniture usually placed against a wall), as well as the broken aquarium, while relating to the open window. I just can't think of anything else that doesn't incorporate something not in the original description.

It is close enough. The gust of wind opened the window, which crashed against the aquarium. The water spilt and took the fishes with it. One can argue with the position, but it is possible, if someone didn't think about the window close enough. Nonetheless, I'll award you with a brownie point!

Okay, to the next riddle. Which is deliberately heavier than the first, as jdrakeh found the death cause very quickly.

2. Step on it!

If Ms. Smith didn't had such a racy driving style, then she would be dead by now. What happened?

Ah! That's why I asked about shutters earlier - like an ass I assumed that this took place in a bog-standard D&D setting (because of where you posted it). Glass windows (and thus, window panes) aren't a fixture of many D&D settings, as they're all more or less analogues to medieval Europe. Had I known that this was a modern setting (with window panes that could be blown open, rather than shutters), I would have had this solved a few posts back ;)
