He says the pins are the cities he heard were hit from the ham radio and the satelite news broadcast segment they saw. He said the laptop was "ruggedized" so it survived the EMP. He mentioned the government used them, and that's when she came to the conclusion he's a spy. He never denied it ot confirmed it.

Is it even his family? At the end of the episode you see him crop a picture of him and place it in a family portrait. And the picture he cropped from look like an army picture.

They're probably some sort of "cover family" so he can fit in with the locals. But they don't because he won't let them. Maybe at some point we'll see exactly who he's working for.

I got the impression that he actually is the father, but he had left the family or at least was rarely, if ever, with them. Though I wouldn't know why they needed to conceal that - but on the other hand, if they used that as a cover story itself, it would have worked fine, too, and it had the advantage of being closer to the truth.

I'm pretty sure it's his family, but he was away for 4-5 years (that was mentioned at some point) and I think when he came back he forced this cover story on them and moved them to Jericho. I suspect Jake was probably in the same "program" while he was away for the last 4 years but either left early or is the "traitor" that was mentioned in one of the previous episodes.

That's been my impression as well. The wife mentions "you go away for 4 years..." but there is definitely a big secret there, as they are rehearsing "previous life" stories to tell the public.

I did like the change between Hawkins and his daughter. It showed he finally kind of assimilated how bad things really are, and how he can't keep his family sheltered forever. His training his daughter with the gun was actually a pretty neat moment, I thought, and I'm taking it to mean it was more than one time he was working with her.

I also think it showed a lot about his opinion of Jake with that fantastic line:

Daughter: "So is he a good man, or a bad man?"
Hawkins (smiles): "Oh, baby... there's no such thing."

He doesn't fully trust him (like he has the honor award!) but he acknowledges that Jake will do what's in the community's best interest.

Maybe. That boy in his "family" must be desperate for a father figure. IIRC, in previous episodes, he (and his mother) wanted Hawkins to father him as you would your child getting ready for bed (i.e., tuck him, read a story, etc.), though Hawkins tried to avoid such responsibility
