JH NameGen Gold is going away

Maraxle

First Post
Since I am no longer an active roleplayer, and am almost equally as inactive on the programming side, I have decided to retire my JH NameGen Gold name generation software. I will be cancelling my vendor account with RPGNow.com on August 31st, at which time JH NameGen Gold will cease to be available for purchase. Even though it will no longer be available for purchase, it is not going into the public domain, and will not be legally downloaded from anywhere. The demo version will also disappear from my website.

Anyway, in preparation for its retirement, I have dropped the purchase price to a mere $5.00, so now's the time to get it if you think you'll ever want it in the future. Here's the purchase link, just in case - http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?cPath=254&products_id=1667&

Out of curiousity, and if you don't mind, how many have you sold? I've been working on and off on a d20 utility and, like you, am pretty much out of RPGs and to a certain extent programming, and so am trying to decide if it might be worthwhile. (Obviously they're different products entirely, but I'm still curious.)

I'm curious - I can understand not having the time to develop it further, but why not leave it on RPGNow? Even if hardly anyone buys it, it'll be useful to some people, and the occasional (albeit) small cheque from RPGNow can hardly hurt!

With software you charge for there's a certain commitment to support it, which if you're not interested in doing, pulling it makes sense.

Though you could add a "THIS SOFTWARE COMES WITH NO SUPPORT, SORRY" notice to it and leave it up, I'd guess.

Maraxle, Let me say I'm sorry to see you won't be supporting the package, and even more sorry your RPG time has taken such a hit. I've gotten a good deal of use out of your product, as it is an awesome alternative to the Everchanging book of names. Sorry to see it, but I hope all goes well for you.

As Fast Learner said, it's the support issue. Also, if it's only selling a copy once in a blue moon, I feel bad taking up RPGNow's "shelfspace".

I dont think i ever got all the patches / updates for it... Those still available?
If you've got version 1.1.3, you're good. If not, email me at webmaster AT jhanson DOT com and I will make sure you get everything you need.

Thanks, Henry. Between my gaming group breaking up, new, albeit less time-consuming hobbies coming along, and a slight shift in my situation that requires some thought and attention, being a D&D player/hobbyist programmer is just not in the cards for me anymore. Anyway, I am glad you have found the program useful, and hope it will continue to help you out for a long time.

Take care!

Jeff

Jeff, JHNameGen Gold is one of the first programs I reinstalled when I had to restore my hard drive after a nasty virus got my computer.

Hope everything works out for you.

Maybe I can send you a blank CD?

Anyway thanks again.

Peace,
Chaz.

Chaz, I hope the update is working well for you.

Anyway, this is just a quick reminder that the software will disappear from RPGNow.com on Tuesday.

Take care, all!

Jeff
