Jim Butcher's Dresden Files

Cancelled after the first season. In my opinion, it didn't have the right chemestry to attract new viewers (although I thought Paul Blackthorne did a good job as Harry). And when they altered too much from the books (like Bob), I think it repelled too many fans.

Damn, that sucks. Thanks for the info.

I just started watching the Dresden Files on Hulu . . . it's FREE, the entire season . . . and I've haven't read the books yet. I'm three episodes in and I am incredibly impressed with this series. Excellent acting, good writing, and decently done and decently sparingly used FX. Lots of fun!

Jim Butcher has been getting more press lately and has appeared on my radar as "someone to read". After starting the TV series, Butcher is now on my "definitely must read soon" list.

I don't think that the series being different from the books truly turned away existing fans in any great numbers. I think most fans are reasonable and don't expect a TV or movie adaptation to religiously follow the source material . . . . it's just the loudest fans are the ones outraged by any deviation, or differing interpretation from their own, from the source.

I tend to be dismissive of criticisms that are simply, "HEY! That's not like the books!" (not aimed at you, Cat!) The very fact that this TV show existed and is available to me now is gonna earn Mr. Butcher some more royalties when I go out and start buying all his books!!!

If they were really depending on current fans of the books to move the show, then they had a bad business plan. The books sell well, but not that well.

As I understand it, about half of all new programs fail to make it into a second season. And this one was a niche show off on a niche channel. At the very start, that makes it unlikely to succeed.

I liked the show, and I think it would have fared better if it had stuck more closely to the plot of the books, but that's because the books were well-plotted. You can change the characters somewhat and still have them work out.
