Job advice needed

There are very few circumstances when you should tell your workplace you're looking for other jobs. This isn't one of them.

Agreed. When one is being recruited isn't a bad moment to tell one's boss. This isn't being recruited.

Put it this way. If they were looking to fire people or "downsize" them, would they give you that courtesy? No.

And as also said, I hope your fiance recovers.

I've been told an interesting piece of advice on telling your employer before you have a job offer in hand: "The fact you are asking the question means the answer is no. If there wasn't any doubt that they would take it well, then you wouldn't be asking for advice on whether or not you should tell them."

Interesting way to put it, and it did sink in...

And as also said, I hope your fiance recovers.

Thank you for the well wishes... we just take it one day at a time. :)

This is a cut throat world, especially business. Not too many businesses will tell you weeks ahead of time if they are letting you go. In most cases they tel you a month ahead of time (or sooner) that they will be layoffs, and leave it a mystery for all to worry about until the day security walks you out. Its a new age and an age were workers have to think as themselves as personal businesses. You have to protect your best interest and do it as covertly as possibly. When i was young in my journalism career I told a 20 year old editor i worked for that i was dedicated to the publication and i didn't even plan on looking anywhere else after graduation (i had a guaranteed job there). He told me some great advice i still remember today, always keep your options open, because people get paid more money than you to manage numbers, and in the end all u are is a number on a budget.

Be careful

Well I guess I'm lucky my job gets more secure as the economy tanks but it gets harder! Anyway wouldn't say a word until you get a solid offer because if they know you are looking elsewhere and more cuts come up I'm sure your name would be at the top to be let go!
