The reason Rodriguez is the correct director for this tale is because he will cast Salma Hayek as Dejah Thoris.

And all will be right in the world.
While this is such a good call, I think someone younger (not that Salma is old).

I don't see anyone amongst the current crop of up-and-comers who fits the role. And a 30's Dejah works just fine for me. Carter's no young pup himself.

And it seems like every other actress in the world is in a race to be as scarily stick-like as possible, which is NOT my Dejah Thoris. I want a Frazetta Dejah.

I don't know, I love Selma but i think there's some others who might fit the bill. For one, there's a gorgeous woman by the name of Roselyn Sanchez (Rush Hour 2 and Boat Trip) who would do just fine as Dejah Thoris. Actually I think she looks more like the picture off the one cover than Selma does.

Yes. Exactly. Thank you.

I actually didn't know that a movie was so close to a reality. Which book(s) is the screenplay being built on?

Just in case anyone here hasn't seen this William Stout interview, and is interested, here is a good read about a 90's attempt at Princess of Mars.
And before I forget, in regards to John Carter of Mars -- it's already been made into a movie; a really successful one. So why do we need to make another? That film's called Return of the Jedi. Princess Leia is dressed as Deja Thoris throughout the film; you've got Martian fliers as ERB described them; the main characters sword fight throughout the movie. If you look at it, it's the essence of John Carter. So if you make a John Carter movie, your audience, who are mostly unaware of the Burroughs books, is going to think you're ripping off a Star Wars film.

As much as I do like Salma, the woman just has too much chin IMO. She's a good looking woman, but not gorgeous enough.

You may proceed to hate me. :)

Ignore too much chin, this woman now has too much box office bankability to be cast in a movie with sagging budget. There are hundreds of future starlets out there, however, with the same look, and possibly acting skills equal or superior to Hayak's, that wouldn't ask for a good 10 to 20 million to be in a two or three picture deal. That's 10 million or more for special effects, mass battle scenes, etc.

Unless Princess of Mars is at its core a "talking head" drama, in which case I retract my statement.
