Background: Long ago there was a wise and kind mage named Haizhe. He had many travels and collected much knowledge. As he aged he decided to settle down and came to the land of Rondovar, where he made agreements with the local lord and established himself in what would soon come to be known The Wizard's Tower of Rondovar. There he spent years ordering his knowledge, peacefully writing and studying. He was also known to take on a few apprentices. This was a rare occurance, and most of his students were uninspired at best. Feeling that his final days were upon him, and having no one worthy to inherit his estate and knowledge, he began to actively search for a worthy apprentice. This search led him to a small abbey near a village that housed several orphans. One of these was a precocious child named Niles.
Niles had already learned his letters, and indeed was very hungry to read instead of play. Even for one so young, he was beginning to get an unwholesome reputation for talking to things that weren't there and his ludicrous flights of fancy. Haizhe knew he had found what he was looking for, and convinced the sisters that he was the boys wealthy uncle come to take him back to his family after all these years. Haizhe told him the truth before they left, and Niles, instantly coming to like the old wizard, thought it a great joke to play on the Sisters. Upon returning to the Wizard's Tower he rapidly justified the old mage's decision. Far and away his best student, life was good until his 18th year. Haizhe passed away shortly afterwords, leaving young Niles as master of the Tower and all its contents. By this time Niles was a solid adept in the arcane, but there was much yet to learn. Greatly saddened by the death of Haizhe, Niles became much more reclusive, his former easygoing nature greatly diminished. Where once there had been a vibrant and dynamic personality, now there was a grim academic whose solitude and time had become precious to the point of making him a practical hermit.
In the years since, Niles has become a powerful practitioner of the arts while still in his prime, and indeed is close to surpassing his former master. While his knowledge has grown great, he has all but exhausted what he can learn from the works left him by Haizhe. Nile's thirst for knowledge is still powerful, in fact more so in recent years as he has glimpsed the heights that he can obtain and knows very well how much he does not yet know. So the time has come to leave the tower and go out into the world. Creatures from other worlds fascinate him, and he still dreams of the fantastic and terrible. Now he sees himself as being able to delve into things even his master had never seen and hopes to do him proud by expanding his library with tomes of knowledge of the deepest secrets about the world and beyond.
Personality: Strong but a bit shy in his way. Almost arrogant in his belief that magic holds the keys to the secrets of the universe, and passively views those without arcane talent as somewhat crippled. Nonetheless, buried deep is the old Niles, who still sees the world as a cornucopia of the fantastic and takes great delight in discoveries of even seemingly minor aspects of it. A good man, he has been locked away for some time and is secretly hoping his travels will reinvigorate him. He still mourns for Haizhe and tries to live up to the old man's lifestyle and expectations.
