Actually I don't have to. Vampirism was depicted as a disease (a la lycanthropy), not as a form of undeath or damnation. So while Beckinsale could do nifty things like jump off buildings and cling to walls, no hiding in front of mirrors or turning into a bat for her. Check out the novella I Am Legend for a similar take on vampires (and a pretty entertaining read.)
