Just got Harry Potter on tape and...

is it just me, but he is suposted to become a great wizard and yet I don't think he cast a single spell in the movie.

Aside from the python sceen early on, he just seems to, well just stand around and watch. Hermonie(sp?) casts several spells; Unlock/Lock(0), Mage Hand(1st), Daylight(2nd) and Hold Person(3rd). Even Ron casts Mage Hand against the troll(got to remember that one), but while Harry uses several magic items like the Broomstick and Cloak of Invisibility, I don't think he cast a single spell.

I really liked the Wizard's Alley! That would be a good topic for a D20 book: Magical Locations in a Mundane World.

Also, I was tring to figure out how the wands in this movie would work in a actual game, like a divine focus does for a cleric? Substiuted for a spellbook for common spells?

I recently re-read the book after I got the movie as well. And I can't remember him casting any spells in the 1st book/movie. He starts casting later in the series, especially Goblet of Fire.

Does anyone know when the 5th book, supposedly titled Order of the Phoenix, is coming out?

Pushed back to 2003 sometime.
Oh joy. I wonder if they'll try to keep up with the punishing movie schedule then. One movie/year, for a total of 7 movies. Chamber of Secrets is coming out around Thanksgiving in the States. I've read they're hoping to have Prisoner of Azkaban out in 2003 and Goblet of Fire out in 2004. With Order of the Phoenix coming out in 2003, that'd put the movie version out in 2005. Doesn't give Rowling much time to have the last 2 done at that rate. Oh well. I can wait...but they'll probably need new actors by that time.

The idea behind trying to make one movie per year is that they should be able to keep the actors - the books are supposed to cover one year each, so if they do one movie per year the actors should age at the same rate as the characters.

I realize that. However, if book 5 isn't to come out 'til next year, Rowlings will be hard pressed to get 6 and 7 out in time to convert them to script. Unless, of course, the last 2 books become adaptations of the script Rowlings writes.

I don't think he cast any spells either. However, Ron's family are all wizards and his older brothers have taught him spells. Hermione is a Muggle like Harry, but her parents are ok with it and let her buy and study her books before heading off to Hogwarts.

Harry knows no magic before coming to Hogwarts and is a little behind the other students. His Magic has come out in unconscious wild surges that show the power that he *will* have after he's learned how to consciously control it.

Rowling has an underlying theme that Harry's not just becoming a great wizard because of his potential power, but also the goodness of his soul.

Actually, I think Prisoner is not slated to be released until 2004.
