Actually, I think Prisoner is not slated to be released until 2004.
Ack! You're right, my simple math skills suck. That's what you get for going through undergrad and grad engineering courses.

Skill vs Power

I think one of the themes of the books is magical skill and knowledge vs magical power.

Think of it as strength vs technique in a fistfight. An untrained but very strong man is almost certainly going to be pasted by a much weaker but well trained one; but if they both had the same training...

I think what a lot of wizards sense in Harry is a tremendous amount of magical wallop. Hermione is much more clever and skilful and knowledgeable, but Harry appears to be stronger.

Put it another way. Hermione learned telekinesis earlier and faster than Harry; but once they'd both mastered it, chances are Harry could lift heavier weights with it.

The magic system is interesting enough, but to me it looks like (if converted to 3rd ed.) they blended the sorc/wiz classes. I just think it would be interesting if the wizards didn't need wands to hone and focus their abilities, but that would be asking to much from the writer. However, this could be a cool idea for either a new character in the book series or a new villain/minion. Much like Scarlet Witch from the x-men cartoon. But that all's just me.

The idea behind trying to make one movie per year is that they should be able to keep the actors - the books are supposed to cover one year each, so if they do one movie per year the actors should age at the same rate as the characters.

I imagine the actors know that. I wonder if, a couple years down the line, and with a couple movies under their belt (with more to come) if a couple of the actors pull a "Friends" and hold out for more money for the remainder of the septology. :)

I realize that. However, if book 5 isn't to come out 'til next year, Rowlings will be hard pressed to get 6 and 7 out in time to convert them to script. Unless, of course, the last 2 books become adaptations of the script Rowlings writes.
She has actually already written book 7. So it's just book no.5.
