I don't often do this, but I'll disagree with Piratecat just this once. Gun play can be a part of a Dread scenario, but you have to parse it a little differently than you would in, say, a d20 Modern game. Combat isn't round for round. You take a whole chunk of it at a time.
I've been thinking of it wrong. Objection withdrawn!

I should point out that any misconception about combat in Dread is entirely my fault. When I wrote the game I figured it would be best to assume the readers knew nothing about role-playing games. That way I would cover all my bases and touch upon the most fundamental things they needed to know. So I left any references to combat being it's own procedure out; because I thought if combat didn't work any differently than anything else, I'd only confuse someone new to role-playing by bringing it up. But I was wrong on two accounts.

First, I really should have explained how it was different for those familiar with role-playing. It was rather silly to overlook the assumptions of those who would obviously make up the majority of my audience. And second, even if you didn't know about other role-playing games you would have benefited somewhat from a discussion of how to handle the tower when the action gets a bit up tempo, such as in combat.

But really, you just handle it like one or more complex tasks. Here's another useful discussion on combat in Dread. Hopefully that helps.

Does that help at all? From what I've heard, most of it becomes instinctual after your first go. But if you do have any questions or concerns, I'd love to hear them. Anything to make the product more accessible.

Very much so, thanks Epi. I would buy the book but I wanted the PDF so that I can read it at work on my lunch hour without worry abou ti tbeing destroyed or lost on my commute.

I think you are right, I just need to give it a whirl and see how it goes... the pacing will likely work itself out.

For example, one of my favorite Dread demos to run is a post-zombie-apocalypse one, which involves a lot of situations like this:

Host: "Three dead burst from the overgrown corn and rush the house, what do you do?"

Marcus: "I shoot them. All. In their heads."

Host: "Well, that's a bit tricky. You've got a revolver, with six round in it. Without even pulling, I'll let you shoot at least one of them in the head, but you'll empty your gun--"

Marcus: "Come on, I used to be a cop. Fourteen years on the force."

Host: "Right, sorry. So, let's do it this way. First one's free, without a pull, but will take at least three rounds. Pull for that one and you'll only spend one round."

Marcus: "Sure, but what about the others?"

Host: "They're coming up fast, so you'll have to pull for each one past the first you want to get before they reach you. Each of those will take three bullets, unless you pull to conserve ammo for them as well."

Marcus: "So to get all three at least four pulls and five rounds of ammo? Or five pulls and I save two extra bullets?"

Host: "Unless you want to let one of them get to you just before you end it."

Marcus (pecking cautiously at the tower): "I'll let you know when I get to that pull."

I'm currently in the middle of Resident Evil 4 on my Wii. That sums it up very nicely. :)

I am so looking forward to getting my paws on this game.

You can purchase through us with the link Lockridge provided, or through IPR where you can help push us up through their bestseller list, rate the game, and get free domestic shipping if you purchase enough other stuff to make the $35 limit. (Might I recommend this year's silver ENnie winner for Best Rules: Spirit of the Century?)

The cover has a gorilla in a biplane!

I was sitting next to Fett during the ENnies.

The nomination screen came up, and he sat up in his chair.

"Is that a gorilla... flying a biplane? That's awesome!"

Then they won the silver, and the screen came back up again.

"How did this not get nominated for Best Cover? A gorilla flying a biplane! I must have this book!"

The recipient came up on stage to collect his reward. To open his acceptance speech, he pointed up at the screen. "We've got a gorilla flying a biplane," he said.

It was a priceless moment.
