Just got my Dragon Compendium - Pretty!

The preorders are out. I think most people who preorder are getting them this week. According to UPS I should have mine tomorrow. I'm wondering how the Death Master compares to the Dread Necromancer from Heroes of Horror.

I too just got it and I'm not overly impressed. 30 years of material to pull from and I get this. Most of the stuff included isn't even 5 years old. I wanted to see old stuff converted to 3.5, converting original 3.0 material isn't all that difficult and as it stands I have all those issues of Dragon if I really wanted to go back to it. I realize there was a lot of material to go through, but I would have liked to seen a more "classic" material. I'm glad I got it (though it was a gift so I'm not out any money) and if more come out I'll get them, but if you are looking for updated "classic" Dragon material, this is pretty lacking.

It wasn't in Games Plus yesterday, and Games Plus is like the prime of stores. If it's not there, it's because it's either A)Not out or B)Sold out. I'm going with A on this one but maybe some people have broken a "street date".

The Paizo folks had a post to the effect that they shipped pre-orders at the same time they shipped to the distributor. Considering the time lag in the distribution chain, it would not surprise me in the least that folks who pre-ordered are getting their sooner.

But for those of us who haven't got a subscription on Dragon, it would be a good book?

Feh. I have a near perfect set of Dragon from #60 on, and scattered issues back to #47. I like the book just fine. I might have liked to have seen the distribution of articles across the life of the magazine to be a little more even, but I'm quite satified with this as their first attempt. I'll be preordering the second volume too. I hope they are working on it already.

I don't have Heros of Horror for comparison, but the Deathmaster was like welcoming home an old friend. I very much liked the class then, and I like the feel now.

Yeah, for non-subscribers it actually is a pretty good resource. It's also a good resource for those who may not have access to thier entire Dragon collection during play (if you are actually using something from the Compendium).

I suppose, like Morgenstern, I would have liked to see a broader distribution of articles instead of the apparent weighting to the past 5 years.

While I wasn't entirely pleased with the book, I understand it's impossible to please everyone all the time. I was good enough that I'll preorder the next volume, in the hopes that it does cover a broader spectrum.

If there are future volumes (it's up to WotC, of course), they will feature a wider array of eras than this first volume. We had to prove that there was a market for this type of product at all before we got too esoteric, but my desk is filled to bursting with old articles begging to be included in future volumes.

the concept is awesome - i just hope it doesn't lose momentum with too many people going "hey, i just bought have of this material within the last 5 years!" and not buying it. there is much future potential for such a line!

Well, this is the thing a lot of people were crying foul over in the "holding the good material hostage".

Haven't seen it yet so can't agree or disagree.
