Just got my Dragon Compendium - Pretty!

That would be "Setting Saintly Standards," by Scott Bennie (who often posts at EN World). It's one of my all-time favorite Dragon articles.

Incidentally, Gary Holian has name-checked a couple of these beings in his death knight two-part opus from Dragon 290 and 291.

One of the death knights named in that article also appeared in "Lost Temple of Demogorgon," in Dungeon #120.

So yeah, that's a good one.

kickass. :)

Yes! Update St. Kargoth, King of the Death Knights and his beloved sword, Gorgorin the Shatterer!

Good stuff in there. Was he in Dungeon #120? I may have to revisit that issue if so!

Got it last friday and have now had a chance to really go through it. The stand out, at first glance, for me is the Battle Dancer base class. My wife loves Martial Artist type PCs and always wants to be "the hot chick" (as in life so in game i guess) so a monk like class with a CHA based AC bonus and special abilities is perfect for her. I like the Urban Druid too, but had that issue of Dragon already. A lot of it is things I already have, but the various things on runes and glyphs and the new classes along with having several things in one place make it well worth the money.

Oh, and I wrote a significant portion of the Feats chapter too. That may have contributed to my estimation of it a little bit.

And yes, its a very pretty book.

Kickin'! This bad boy's going on my Christmas list....

I may not have a subscription to Dragon, but a one-time fee for the creme de la creme is much more palatable to me than a yearly subscription for stuff I may or may not find a use for before they fall apart...

Sweet! :)

I've got to ask... what the hell does a Jester do?

The jester's job is to be a fly on the wall. Appear to be a fool that no one will take seriously, while he listens and learns -- hiding in plain sight, as it were. He is also an vital advisor to his lord, helping to spark "outside the box" thoughts. Plus, he must ensure the lord's spirits are kept high. Finally, if all else fails and the knights, wizards, and spies come home empty handed, the jester may end up picking up the slack.

Essentially, the jester catches all the bits of a court that tend to fall through the cracks. In a way, he is in tune with the natural chaos and entropy that will always exist amidst order and he uses that insight for the greater good (or his lord's good, or maybe just his own -- your call).

Plus, it's really, really cool to be able to choose your result on a Rod of Wonder. I'm curious how that ability translated.

Saints be praised!

Okay, I asked for it, Erik likes it, and lots of people agree. Saints in the next one, you have to do it now!

Looks like tons more classes, feats, prestige classes, etc. Ill pass. I have quite enough of this junk already. I was *SO* hoping that some of the really nice old articles would be polished up and put forth in these pages. A lot more descriptive and how-to stuff would be nice, although not everyone needs this stuff. It would have been nice to see at least a decent mix though. Judging by the TOC, this is just more of what got me to cancel my Dragon subscription in the first place. YMMV, and I hope it does, because I would very much like Erik and the gang to release a vol. II with more of what I was looking for in Vol I. Oh, and a dungeon compilation WOULD be brilliant.

Anyone feel up to doing a brief compare and contrast monk vs battle dancer?

That'd be really nice. I haven't seen the battle dancer yet. It sounds like it might fit my game very well, though.
