Just how prepared are your contingency plans

Many criminals these days are getting caught via electronic data trails and the results of their online research.

To combat the latter:

1) don't do the online research yourself

2) don't do the online research on your own machine

3) don't do your research online

Dammit.

Not really. What you forget is that most of the entire planet is a "safe spot". There is no massive computer watching every security camera in the nation doing facial recognition or anything. Anywhere that is fairly open and not crawling with cops is pretty safe. He only has to know a couple such places to have one handy.

It is also possible to be hiding in plain sight for long periods of time. For example, James Whitey Bulger, Abbie Hoffman, etc ...

There were even cases of fugitives who lived in plain sight and died a free man without ever being caught, such as Josef Mengele.

It's funny - I'm going to be in a Leverage game at our club's next session, and I looked up a list of common cons on Wikipedia just so that I could get the lingo down, and even as I started reading through them I was thinking "Is this going to get me into trouble if I ever get accused of fraud someday?"

I know I'm being paranoid. I'm just not sure I'm being paranoid enough.

That is the new problem about learning things. it leaves a trail that looks like research for crime.

Because real bad guys make the mistake of researching their topic (like how to use Muriatic acid to remove blood so it can't be detected), talking a good game about "I know how I'd commit that crime...". to being that guy who everybody knows that you know enough stuff to be dangerous.

it all makes you look like a suspect. Even if you're not a bad guy. heaven forbid that anything bad should fall near you and you get examined as a possible suspect. Suddenly, all that makes you look guilty.
