So in all the time I've been playing 3rd edition, I've never once played a PC with Power Attack until last night. OMG it's fun! APAATT (All Power Attack All The Time) is unbelievably entertaining. Fighting defensively with full PA when outnumbered six to one is doubly fun. :)

I do it most the time with my 5th level barbarian. Cleave is great fun with it as I'm killing two things a round at times. It's awesome!! :D

we have two dwarf barbarians in our LG game at 4th level.
They do this all the time.
It is unbelievabley frustrating to watch them roll a 13-15 and miss......especially as they will eventually roll an 19 and do so much damage they kill the monster to way past its hitpoints.

They (the characters) both lack the intelligence to realise they should sometimes change tactics. which i guess is playing in character!!

my one APAATT character was a failure -
I made him a simple ex-miner with a dire pickaxe, priest of the god of stone.
He was all set to APAATT with a two handed x4 crit weapon.
then the DM says we are starting at 11th level. With a high wisdom I had to assume he had learned better. He ran his own temple for pities sake.

He would normally add up all the bonuses he got from buff spells, (esp quickened DF) and power attack for that amount. If the party was missing alot he would drop it. If he was making more than 2 attacks, (from haste, divine power etc) it would drop.

He did relish an easy target and would get upset if anyone else killed the AC 15 undead that kept showing up.

In his greatest battle he crit twice in consectutive rounds for 250 dmg - then the Balor exploded :(

In the spirit of a Power Attack appreciation thread, I'm going to horribly mangle Wulf's quote: APAATT isn't a tactic, it's a philosophy. This particular philosophy is called "And Stay Down!". I had a couple of attacks miss because of the PA, but I was totally okay with it because it was a state of mind deal rather than a strategic decision that failed.

Drowbane: I usually end up filling the gaps in my party, and front line fighter is always the first to go. So I've done bards, druids, rogues, clerics, and loads of other funky stuff to round out the group.
