George Lucas tells a scooper for Cinescape that in the back of his noggin' he has an idea for another add-on to the "Star Wars" movie series : A prequel to "The Phantom Menace".

Nope, not the adventures of young Jar Jar Binks building an underwater haven - but the tales of the Jedi regaining control of the universe from the many Dark Lords some 88 years before Anakin Skywalker's bowl cut ever graced the earth.

Yoda - who was instrumental in the effort - would apparently have a headlining role.

Lucas is definitely moving in the wrong direction. I want to see what happens next rather than see more of the background details. We now know enough of this story, so let's move on already.

Considering how many other things he wants to do, and how relieved he's been with Star Wars being over, I'd definitely lean towards false. However, we're going to see things like this all the time now...just because they grab attention, true or not.

If he did, that'd be trashing his own continuity pretty well, even more so than he already has.

88 years? Didn't the Jedi Council remark on the Sith having been gone for some 1,000 years?

I'm going to say it's a rumor. I don't think even Lucas would say "Bother all" that much to what he's written. The Obi-Wan, Leia's mother lines, and the like, are all fairly minor...that, though? 1,000 years of peace and no Sith?

I doubt it. I certainly wouldnt mind, though. I think the prequels would have been vastly improved if Episode I were essentially that plotline mentioned above, Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones were compressed into a single Episode II (with Anakin already a teenager when discovered by Qui-Gonn and Obiwan) and Episode III more or less as is.

Ah, the sweetly sick smell of might-have-beens...
