Just wondering

Read the PHB for hackmaster. Thought it was funny.

Made up some characters for Hackmaster. Thought they were funny.

Played Hackmaster.

Not so funny.

Much too much of everything got stuffed in there. I can't see anyone playing with even 1/2 of the rules presented in the GMG and PHB. Add in 8 monster books and the various classbooks and it was just too expensive too. I got out early and don't really regret it.

Does anybody else other than my group play hackmaster?

I wanted to, but the insane amount of errata in the first printing player's guide (2001) really killed any interest that I had in the game. I stuck with AD&D 1e and just 'humorized' it with content from the Hackmaster strips.

read your GMG... Hackmaster is 4ed.

i know it says that but i challenge you to show me a significant difference between hackmaster 2e AD&D. its pretty much the same thing, so much so that i already knew the rules before i first played (i like to learn as i go).

I bought the PHB and the DMG, but couldn't afford to get any of the monster books, so eventually decided to sell - I am considering picking up Castles and Crusades though (I missed out on OD&D, 1e, and 2e but think there's a lot of stuff from previous editions worth checking out).

you definitely missed out on what i consider a more streamlined and less complicated system than 3e, and if your looking to join those of us who still play and have kept the faith, welcome!
i must warn you, though, it is a very very different sytem than 3e, and youll have to in essence relearn to play the game. thats why many of us didnt convert, we had a system that worked and we knew it in and out, why learn something new and radically different.

if you know how to play hackmaster you know how to play AD&D, and the PHB and DMG arent terribly different from the originals.

i have quite a few 3e books, most open game liscense stuff (which is the greatest contribution that 3e has made and one i am eternally thankful for) which i use as supplements. it takes alot of tweaking, but its worth it. if i can help you with any 1e/2e/0D&D reference material, let me know at my email. i cant guarantee a prompt response but you will get one.

one rule right off the top(edit) of my head... the bonus HPs for both PCs and Monsters. there are more but i'm not going to do a page by page comparison.
