Kalamar product review: Harvest of Darkness

I almost don't know where to begin, there's so much postive to say. I've heard an almost endless array of great things about Kenzer & Co. and particularly Kingdoms of Kalamar...now I know why.

Harvest of Darkness comprises four previously published adventures in their 3E translations, with particular attention towards customizing them for KoK. Each of these adventures is capable of acting as a stand alone mini-campaign, or the DM may choose to intertwine the tales into one larger storyline.

Here are my thoughts listed in rapid-fire succession:
** The diverse adventure styles encompassed in Harvest of Darkness are amazing. Each of the four mini modules has its own distinct style and flavor, ranging from combat heavy to cunning and guile-dependent.
** The background detail is very thorough, yet easy to recall and reference. After a brief read-through, I felt prepared to run any of the four adventures.
** The NPC's are memorable yet realistic -- not a given in many modules.
** Picture cards are included to enhance the DM's descriptions...something I remember liking from modules such as Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, Tomb of Horrors, etc.
** New monsters and templates are included which seem believable, and more importantly well-conceived and balanced.
** None of the four adventures in this module err on the side of too much reward for too little risk. Groups which endeavour to complete these campaigns are going to earn every victory and gp.
** The story hooks provided make sense, and the adventures are designed in such a way that they could easily be dropped into any ongoing campaign of appropriate level. In fact, one could even gear them more or less towards town or wilderness encounters depending on party composition.
** Many of the encounters are completely unique, and will leave players with long-lasting impressions and scars (physical, emotional and mental) for their efforts.
** I flat out loved the inclusion of several villains and organizations ripe for positioning as party nemesis.
** Players are unlikely to become bored by the events surrounding their missions, and there's enough latitude provided for stories to move off track before surging ahead.

The bottom line for me, is that I enjoyed Harvest of Darkness enough to trigger the purchase of the KoK Player's Guide and Campaign Setting!! Granted these were purchases I'd been considering previously, but this compilation module sold me on the quality of Kenzer's products and Kalamar as a backdrop. This may all seem like fluff without criticism to match my glowing remarks, but in all sincerity there just wasn't much I disliked about Harvest of Darkness. There were a few map typos, and the occasional vague reference or descriptor, but even these were minor.

Thanks for the chance to review this product Noah, Mark, Dave et al :)!!

I think you'll find that all Kenzer stuff is top notch in the quality department.

And just because it says Kingdoms of Kalamar doesn't mean that you have to run it there. Most of their stuff, is easily convertable to any setting.

Welcome to the Kenzer bandwagon!

Quickbeam,

Man, you got your review up WAAAAY faster than Treebeard!! What's his deal anyway?

Thanks for the review! If you have the inclination, it'd be great if you posted it as an official review as well. (That way it can last through the ages).

LOL :D
Being hasty does have its advantages in some circles, despite being a massive drawback in others ;). I took your suggestion to heart, and posted the review official-like.

BTW, it was my pleasure receiving and reviewing the module!

I have ordered a general subscription for KenzerCo products at my local Weird Pete. The owner said, "Are you sure? I mean, some of WotC's stuff is bad. Do you wanna risk it?"
I just looked him into the eye confidently.

Get "Siren's Prize" I've used about 90% of it already, in a totally unrelated adventure. NEVER have I been able to so easily canabalize a module. And it was damn good to start with, I just used it for something different.

I'll check it out -- thanks for the head's up :)! I'm very impressed by the ease with which a DM could choose to integrate some or all of the KoK modules into other ongoing campaigns and worlds. That's a very strong testament to the quality of Kenzer's products.

My Review is forthcoming...

I'm another one of the lucky winners of this module, and I'm still in the process of reading through it...a full review to come soon.

But initial impressions are definately favorable.

I'm a big fan of Kenzer Co. anyway, I subscribe to KODT, bought the KoK setting (though I've not played it yet), and have been pleased with just about everything they've put out. From what I have read around here about the KoK Player's Guide, that is one my list too...

I have a few minor gripes with the module, but nothing huge. I'm still sort of sifting through the details.

One thing about KoK that I've changed my mind about is the names. At first I hated them. Could not stand them. But as time went on, I realized that they sounded very realistic, unlike most fantasy settings.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Forgotten Realms (running two campaigns in that setting now). But the names, as cool as they sound, are not very realistic. But I digress...

Anyway, once I finish reading it completely I'm going to write a detailed review.

'Nuff Said.

<<Spoilers -- Thomas' FR campaign players -- go away!!>>

I bought Siren's Prize (my first Kalamar product) only because I flipped thru it and saw that it had a lighthouse in it, which I had already decided I was going to use in my adventure. So I bought the module so I could use the illustration and the maps (since I didn't know what should be in a lighthouse). I ended up using almost all of the original lighthouse content and incorporated a big portion of the plot into my adventure, and was inspired by the sea caves below, and ended upadding them to my adventure as well.
I had also a shipwreck in the next part of my adventure, and used the illustration and floorplans/contents of the wrecked ship as well.
To be honest, I have no interest in the KoK setting, but the adventures and materials are really converting well. I have since bought Harvest of Darkness, Adriv's Revenge, The root of all evil, The invasion of arun kid, and the Kok Players Guide. All excellent products. The modules I got because they are for low levels 1st- 2nd for the most part, and there aren't too many good low level modules out there.
Once I go thru them all a little more thouroughly, I will begin to post reviews.
