Karnstein Vampires

In the run-up to Halloween I watched a bunch of classic Hammer horror films, including 1970's The Vampire Lovers, based on J. Sheridan Le Fanu's novella Carmilla. I was struck by a few things -- how reasonably faithful the movie was to the source, the variant abilities of the vampires (for example, sunlight didn't bother them), and of course, boobies.

More seriously, though, I understand that Hammer created a whole Karnstein vampire mythos with a couple of direct sequels and at least one more movie (Circus of Vampires) that had similarities to Vampire Lovers.

I've never been a huge fan of D&D's take on vampires. I'm OK with the energy drain mechanic, but I don't think it fits all that great when combined with all the other traditional (movie) vampire abilities. And in 3.xe this makes for a very complicated and powerful template.

A Karnstein-style vampire, though, seemed like it would work well in D&D.

So I decided to try to make a new template for Carmilla-style vampires. I dropped energy drain and added some different abilities. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Pretty cool! The shroud business seems a little funny to me, since they already have a coffin, but I guess this has something to do with the original source (which I'm not familiar with). On the whole, though, I like etherealness vs gaseous form and really like borrowing dream haunting.
