D&D 5E Kate Welch's adventure anthology. What happened to it?

I assume it was just delayed, possibly because they wanted to move Tasha's up and COVID disruption. I don't see any reason why they couldn't release such a project (it's an adventure compilation, it's not exactly complicated).

I do think that WotC did have some restructuring of their releases as they also said Gem Dragons would be released this year, which also appears to not be happening.

Based on the transcript you posted, it seems like she’s talking more about the experience of new users rather than a user experience that is new. Is that how you’re reading it too?

I had first read it as "new... user-experience" and I could not imagine what that means. "New-user... experience" makes more sense!

It's hard for me to tell if 5e has a problem with beginners. I pretty much always have beginners in my groups, since I frequently invite non-gamer friends to try the game out, but they are also people who haven't even seen the books and totally rely on me to teach them how to play, so if they have a bad experience it's my fault. As someone with ~20 years experience in DMing and ~25 years playing, I know how to read 1000 pages of a new edition, and I never buy "starter sets"...

I hope so, but it sure seemed like it was supposed to come out early this year. Kate was supposed to spill the beans on the project in the first Dragon+ issue of 2020 and then that never happened. Kate changed positions within the D&D team at the same time and now she has left entirely. Seems a bit like a death spiral to me. I certainly hope I am wrong.

I wonder if that was going to be the same product. If not, it is really unusual that they hinted at two upcoming products then never delivered them. Nothing like that has happened since the beginning of 5e.

Nothing like COVID-19 has happened since the beginning of 5e. It’s a lot more serious than jury duty. There are bound to have been delays and reshuffles.
I agree completely; however, it is clear the delay of Kate's book happened well before covid-19 was a force in the USA. Not sure when the last promised the gem dragons though.

Nothing like that has happened since the beginning of 5e.

Actually, there was the whole kerfuffle around the Elemental Adventurer's Handbook being cancelled before it was announced, which WotC never really came clean about, and the apparent mess behind the scenes as they reorganized their product schedule (which resulted in SCAG), and it took two whole years for them to turn around and get a new strategy with XGtE. The original idea was they would do two APs a year, with a crunch book released alongside each.

They've done a good job keeping most of their drama quiet, but it happens.

The elemental adventurer's handbook was what I was referring to when I said "since the beginning." When they said it couldn't be cancelled because it was never announced. They did end up offering most if it for free didn't they. I don't know why corporations are so afraid of saying: "Hey, we made a mistake and..."
