Keeping your players on thier toes

Driddle

First Post
As the party of PCs carefully pick their way down the dungeon corridor, the DM stops action for a moment and, with a devilish grin, asks each one of them -- except the middle party member, who gets a wink instead -- to make a d20 roll. "Add your wisdom modifier," he orders. After all the dice tumble and totals are recited, he chuckles and asks that two of the character sheets be passed up the table. He scribbles something behind his DM Screen and hands the sheets back. "OK. Now what were you doing?..." And the players, visibly antsy, stumble on into the darkness, sans explanation of what just transpired.

In truth, nothing happened.
The DM merely went through the motions to keep the players on their toes and wondering what's up next.

Ever do it? I've gotta recommend -- it's a lot of fun!

I'll have to remember that one. I am a big fan of the 'roll a bunch of dice and act like you are writing down some big numbers' method to get everyone's attention.

GM Bluff vs Player Sense Motive - It happens from time to time in my games. Actually, the other week one of my players was commenting on that aspect of the game. He wasn't sure if his PC wasn't affected by something because he rolled well, or if I just had him roll to make it harder for the group to figure out what happened with everyone else. I have to admit that I find those types of puzzles fun.
