Kickin' it old school -- are you game?

i'm currently refereeing an OD&D(1974) campaign. our next session is this Sunday.

but if i didn't have that group and the other options were 1edADnD or d02. i'd be playing 1ed.

I’m sure my group would like to go back to AD&D. We’ve only began 3.X this year. But most of us have invested a lot in the 3.X sources. And god bless Mothers in-law. Mine pretty much spoiled me on my last Birthday/Christmas (Same thing) with pretty much purchasing my whole Amazon wish list!!
On the other hand we have so much AD&D stuff, it’s crazy. A whole tri-wall full and more is rotting at each of our parent’s house for sure.

I'm currently playing in a 1st ed. AD&D campaign that meets every other Sunday (theoretically, though we tend to cancel about every 3rd session due to being busy adults with families and lives). I've never played 3E but most of the other players have, and they claim to prefer 1E because it's faster moving and less number-intensive, plus the nostalgia factor. (Note that the current DM is ignoring a lot of 1E's more complicated rules re: initiative, unarmed combat, weapon vs. AC adjustments, etc., though when I was DMing for the group last year we used all of it (because I'm such a geek that I have it all internalized)).

I think the open architecture of 3rd Edition is great stuff. So are the Feats and Skills. I also think the 6 second combat rounds are neat (if not TOO much real life time is devoted to only combat.)
Combine these with the 1st/2nd edition rules, and the result is a blast.

I'dbe happy to play a game of1E, heck, evenacampaign, as a nice light alternative with a big chunk of nostalgia thrown in. Anything to let me play a 1E ranger again :)

My question: do any of you play AD&D 1e and/or OD&D (ie Diaglo-edition ;) )? If not, would you be open to it? Just curious.
I play in a long running 1e game, and have been DMing 1e since january. I was running B/X the 6 months prior to the current 1e game.

If you're thinging of playing the older editions, just be sure you're doing it for the right reason--the right reason that it will be more fun.

Remember that 3.5e is the result of a lot of rules tinkering, player surveys, and playtesting by real gamers in an attempt to come up with an improved version of the game. Of course, due to differences in taste and preferences, it's impossible to design one game that will please everyone, but I think that 3.5 pleases a lot of people.

So play whichever edition will be more fun for you and your group. But remember that a lot of effort has gone into making 3.5 edition the most fun edition of them all.

i'll just agree with john. some people enjoy the newer editions. some do not.

some think it is the best thing since sliced bread. some think that a lot of work by 10000 monkeys to type a sentence on a typewriter is better effort spent.

Nah. I just meant since there is a skill, Gather Information, that allows you to by-pass an entire evening of role-playing legwork so why aren't there a skill that allows you to by-pass an entire combat encounter? -But it was said tongue in cheek and just for laughs.

...And this is where Spycraft 2.0 gives d20 a kick in the pants. There does need to be an optional, widely-known task-resolution system as complex as combat, so that there can be both drama and dice-rolling available for those who want it. Its 'dramatic conflict' system for Hacking, Interrogation, Brainwashing, Chases, Manhunts, and even Seductions is a great idea. Now, their execution needs a little more work IMO, because some of the actions they describe sound very off when they come up, requiring a good bit of DM finessing to make smooth, but the core idea and rules is a great one.

<nods in agreement>
<points at sig, a few posts back>

I got tired of saying things like that in posts, so I just tacked onto the end in my sig.
