There are two basic choices.
1) Select a class (and feats) that has the ability to be played as a stong martial artist, such as the Swordsage, and RP it as whatever type of martial artist you prefer.
2) Select a class (and feats) that most readily fit the character you are trying to build, regardless of how strong / poor they are, and use this as a crutch to support your RP.
Either one can perform a roundhouse kick, just in one case it is lower case and encourages you to RP it while using a powerful maneuver or feat, while in the other case it is Upper Case and allows you to easily just say "Roundhouse Kick" and everyone will know what mechanic you are using with no neep to RP.
While it may require more character building work and more attentiveness to RP, in the long run I think you would be happier with the former.
