[Kind of OT] Internet Prevention of Filesharing

James McMurray

First Post
Hey everyone, me and my wife are in the process of developing a sourcebook for 3E and plan on selling it through rpgnow.com. However, we're a little concerned about how to prevent rampant filesharing from occuring, as has happened with WotC's pdfs and a few of Monte Cooke's projects.

Anyone hve any good ideas on the subject?

Also, any advice anyone whose actally created and sold one of these things would be willing to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

The only solution I can suggest is to change the hearts of mankind the world over. Sorry. I had thought about doing the same thing and nixed it after some minor research. E-mail me or send me a private message for details.

You could always try to guilt trip them ... say thank you for buying this product we have worked so hard for and thank you for supporting us, etc ...

Have you considered a curse? I'd suggest the following:

"Debt will come on swift wings to him who distributes illegaly this PDF thing."

Or some varient thereof.

If that fails you could make sure your product really sucks. That should quell filesharing fairly effectively.

Insert lots of glaring errors into the book. Then, publish some errata each month - but only give them to registered owners. This way, keeping pirates up-to-date will be a big hassle for those who gave them the files. ;)

Darkness: How much will it cost me to get the erratta for your post? You said "Make sure lots of glaring errors into the book." I know you meatn "get into the book." Obviously if one error made it through others may have. So, how do I become a registered owner? :)

On a side note: Isn't that the strategy WotC seems to be using with their products? :) (That was my wife's humorous add-on)
