King Arthur - R&R or RPGO?

Relics and Rituals: King Arthur

or Legends of Excalibur?

Well we have all had glances at both products by now, via preview or even full fledged PDF.

Which product is appealing to everyone more?

I was waiting for a preview of the R&R one to lean me one way or another...

Based on everything I have seen so far - I am now leaning towards Legends of Excalibur. I'll still check them both out of course before purchasing...

But the sneak peeks have made the RPG objects one stand out for me. Especially that map of Sir Ector's realm. Plus it is going to be full color!

Of course, I might have to get both too!

What are all of your thoughts?

Can the authors of each chime in and give us more info on their products?

It 's not bad, it just looks too goofy for my taste, with orcs and such - I'll probably wait 'til I can get it on ebay for 1/3 the cover price or so.
looks like they're trying to shoehorn D&D into the Arthurian mythos, instead of building an authentic Arthurian d20 game. elves, orcs, undead? that's not what i want.

on the other hand, i liked Blood & Guts and Blood & Fists well enough, and was absolutely blown away by Darwin's World 2e. i've looked over the previews from RPGObjects but i probably would've even bought it sight unseen, based on what they've done before.

also, i have confidence that the RPGO book will be "complete", whereas S&SS and White Wolf seem to suffer from supplementitis -- putting vital parts of the game in a different book, forcing gamers to purchase several books to get a working system.

I hope I'm not too much of a buzz kill, but the print version won't be in color. :(

I tried hard to find a printer with a reasonable color quote, but sadly could not. It was often 4 times the B&W quote.

I will say that Charles and I tried very hard to make this an Arthurian Supplement and not a D&D/Arthur hybrid. Charles as always did a great job researching.

Also, remember you can always upgrade to the print version, so you can try it out cheaply.

Ops, let me rephrase that. MOST of the book will be black and white. The maps will be in color printed on the inside cover. Just like we did with Darwin's World 2.

This is me bucking the trend of the thread. After reading Ethan Skemp's comments on rpg.net , I'm planning on picking up the R&R book. I've been toying for years with the idea of running a Camelot-style game with the PCs in the place of Arthur and co. I'll be getting their Greek book when it comes out, as well.

As a playtester of Excalibur, I too am probably biased. Having said that, Excalibur is one of the best written games I've played. The mechanics are tight, the new base classes and PrCs fit the setting very well, and the GM's section is a must read for every GM, not just Excalibur. The whole feel of the game is completely different from D&D.

I highly recommend it.

I really hope that the R&R book succeeds. This is the sort of product that ought to go over big with the D&D fanbase that makes up the majority of the hobby: something to provide the style of a thing without making it Not D&D, in the manner of AEG's revision of L5R into a D&D campaign setting.

I'll probably end up buying both. I will pick up the R&R version off of e-bay at a massive discount, but buy the RPGO version direct from the publisher to make sure they get all the profits.

:)
