King Kong

I saw King Kong last week; I am so pleased with it! Finally someone who understands Kong and B-Pictures of yore. It was like watching an expensive B-movie, which was PERFECT for this film. It was a delight for me from beginning to end. I could totally tell the director, stars, etc. were fans of the original.

I have hated the loss of old B-movies of old and love movies that hit the style so well. This one was one of them.

I really loved how the "8th Wonder of the World" show in NYC utilised music from the original King Kong! There were quite a few respectful in-jokes about the original movie in this one - not like the campy approach taken in the 70's remake.

The only negative was the length (and this is a minor quibble). If they had cut five or ten seconds out of most of the scenes, that might have made the film a little tighter. Even so, the movie was delightful and lived up to my highest hopes (I won't say it lived up to my expectations, because my expectation and my hopes were on two different levels; I expected them to make the film more realistic than the original and I am so glad they did not - this film hit my hopes and exceeded my expectations).

For the second time this year I am glad I spent my money to actually see a film in the theatre (Batman Begins was the first); so many other films this year was a disappointment, one way or another.

Now, if only someone could talk Peter Jackson into remaking The Creature from the Black Lagoon...

I don't have any experience with past versions of KK, but I really, really enjoyed the movie. Me, Thormagni (and his clan), Gaspar (and his oldest), and Odovacar went to see it on my Birthday. It was a blast. :) Plus, thanks to the generosity of Thormagni's Clan, I got in for free! WOO!

I have been a fan of the original King Kong since I was a little boy. Although inferior in many ways, I even enjoyed the 70's remake.

Nothing will ever be the same as the original Kong, but... wow, that movie was darn-tootin' close! It had the right atmosphere, the right level of respect for the original and the most interesting mixture of lavish expense and B-movie plotting I have ever seen!

Besides some naysayers bitching about the length of the movie. I wish the movie was longer.

Overall, I will be buying this movie. I highly enjoyed it. Though, perhaps watching the movie in the center of the theatre (my personal preference), instead of the 3rd row from the front, may increase my enjoyment of the movie.

Ah, I got to see it in the centre of a nearly empty theatre. It an was excellent vantage point.

I wasn't bitching about the length, really. I had to really search and wrack my brain to find even that much of a negative.

I do wish there were some background on some of the fantastic civilisations that were seen on the island.

Especially within the "cave" where the skeletons of other "king kongs" were laying.

Some background info on the ancient races on the island.

I was SO hoping that they would stumble upon a cache of treasure for the "pirate" crew.

Also, a scene or three on how they got Kong onto the ship.

On a side note:

I did love the facial expressions on King Kong.

A few scenes brought a tear to my eye. (Mostly near the end).
