Knowledge (local)

Suggestion would be to just increase the DCs. But if you look at the DCs right now.. they are defined by an easy question or hard question.

Knowledge(local) for a peasant. Easy questions, just about everything about what people do in your local town. Major merchants of nearby cities. The names of many of the nobles in the region. And probably at least the king and much of the royal family. You'll know the customs of the nearest few towns, and maybe the overall kingdom, but wouldn't have heard of the nieghiboring kingdoms customs unless it was something extremely weird.

knowledge (local) for a noble. They are going to know all the major region kings and whatnot, and probably have heard about the kings and royalty of kings far away. laws and customs for the major countries around you, but probably not anything about special customs of most towns.

knowledge (local) for a military person. Know just about all the names of heros from even several kingdoms over. Probably only know the customs of the areas if it pertains to war. And then you could probably tell what sorts of armor and weapons most of the nearby kingdoms use.

My interpretation is that how far the knowledge goes, or what is defined as easy is really dependant on the situation.

I agree with the need for specific locales for Kn(Local)

Why?

Do you make a player take Knowledge (plane of fire)? Or Knowledge (Moradin's religion)?

Hey, you said it wasn't implied in the core rules, I was simply showing where it is implied by the core rules.

Sorry about that, I know I was being a little snippy.

Yes, that passage seems to imply that you must take a specialization for K(local). However, I believe that to be a mistake, as I think something so critical to how the skills work would be under the description of those skills.

And I still believe that making players further specialize in K(local) makes the skill more worthless than Use Rope. At least I can tie a knot wherever I go...

Use Rope (Hemp (squar (borderlands (useing teeth (once in a blue moon) ) ) )

mmm.. feel the power ;)

I can see both sides, I am unsure which I would go with.

But then, I have never had a character who wished to burn the points on it. Knowledge (history) sure! Knowledge (local pub)..umm.. no.. ;)

speaking of history though, wouldnt that also require a place and time going by that interpretation?

I've always played it that knowledge (local) is not defined by region or locality. It's general knowledge about all locals. A social anthropologist for instance would have a several ranks each in knowledge ( history ), knowledge (geography) and knowledge (local).
