Known spells for bards

Is it possible for a bard (or a sorcerer) to choose a lower level spell in lieu of a higher one? For example, if I become a 7th level bard, I get an extra 2nd level and 2 third level spells, but no firsts. Could I use the 2nd level slot to learn an extra 1st level spell? I know I'd be getting screwed from a power-gaming perspective, but there are certain spells I'd like the character to have that I won't get otherwise.

It would be a very stingy DM who wouldn't allow you to do this. Whether it's spelled out in the rules as allowable or not, I can't recall for certain and don't have my book handy.

If you follow the rules strictly, you cannot choose lower level spells in lieu of higher level ones. I don't see how this could not be allowed, tho.

There is a feat (Extra Spell) which allows you to learn a new spell (chosen from any spell level, except the highest one available to you, when you learn the feat) in Tome & Blood. Maybe that helps.

Huhm

Check the sorcerer and bard character class description. I think the sorcerer can cast spells of a lower level with a high level slot, the bard can not. Perhaps there is something about a sorcerer can choose to learn a lower level spell. Bards: huhm.

But I agree that no DM should be sooo stingy :)

Anyone can cast/prepare lower level spells with higher level spell slots, but for spells known, this does not apply usually.

AFAIK, it's only mentioned at the sorcerer. Would be a nice question for the Sage, but I simply like it that way (downgrading the bards casting compared to the sorcerers)

Extra spell is perfect. I can't believe I didn't think of that myself. Thanks. As to the bard casting spells in a higher slot, every game I've been in has allowed that. I actually thought it was by the rules, but maybe I'm mistaken.

Thanks again!

Last time I checked, Bard's cast spells like Sorcerers so they should use the very same rules, even tho they speak of Sorcerers only, because of them being more common.
