'Known World' - OD&D

Insight

Adventurer
Anyone know where I can get additional info on the 'known world' from the time of OD&D? I've posted this question before, but since I can't search and I didn't have the foresight to bookmark the thread...

I have X2, which has some decent info, but I was hoping to find an actual site dedicated to this world, or maybe somewhere that I can download OOP materials (or buy if possible).

Thanks,

Diaglo!!! Someone needs you!!

Much of the old material can be bought in PDF form from RPGNow.com and there is a few items on Wizards site for free, though they might have removed that by now.

The Knowne World has been around in one form or another for quite a long time - it's possible that you knew it when it was called Mystara (who's semi-official website is here.

TSR put out a series of Gazeteers that did a pretty good job of fleshing out the setting in the late 80's early 90's.

Cool. I seemed to recall that Mystara had something to do with the 'Known World', but I wasn't 100% sure that the settings were one and the same.

I'll check out those sites.

The Vault of Pandius, linked above, is pretty good, but be aware that most of the material is fan-written. Some of it is slavishly close to the published canon, and just extends it past the end of the official almanacs, but some of it also goes off in wildly different directions as well.

I contributed to the site through the Mystara Mailing List in the past -- I did a lot with the halflings of the Five Shires and some bits with Glantri and Karamekios.

Just to Clarify...

The Known World was basically the area of Mystara where the Gazetteer line of supplements was set, later expanding to also include Alphatia. You can find an entire map of the world of Mystara on the inside cover of one of the OD&D rulesets (I think it's the Companion set, or maybe Master--traveling on business so don't have my library to peruse :D )

It is more then semi-official. It is the official fansite for the setting.

The website not only publishes every bit of fan authored material the website operator can find, he also hosts some free Mystara material that WotC released a few years ago.

The DM portion of Gaz 13: The Shadow Elves is hosted there.

The Player's portion of Gaz 13 is there.

The Savage Coast Campaign Book is there.

The Savage Coast Monstrous Compendium is there.

The Orc's Head Peninsula Campaign Book is there.

Lots of stuff good stuff. A Mystara-phile could get lost there.

The first map was in X1, Isle of Dread, but an expansion map was in the inside cover of the Companion boxed set.

I'm not a Mystara expert but iirc, the KW was called that as opposed to the largely unknown Hollow World inside the planet (Mystara was on the outside).
