Kobolds as Pangolins

Somewhere somebody reffered to kobolds as scaly rats and for some reason the image that came to mind was a Pangolin (aka scaley anteater) I even went away and scribbled up a picture of a humanoid Pangolin.

Now Pangolins are mammals with long sticky tongues and huge claws, who are covered in sharp scale plates, can roll into a defensive ball, extrete a nauseating acid from anal glands and have a well deveopbed problem solving ability which makes them amazing escape artists (and trapsmiths(?))

Can you see it? How would you stat up a humanoid Pangolin of koboldian proportions?

Have I discovered the true genetic ancestor of the scaley rat of 1e?

I'd make them identical to kobolds and say the nausea effect had mostly been left behind. I'd make a feat that would give a stench ability identical to a troglodyte's ability, though, to represent the ability in those specimens who still had it.

Neat idea.

Good call!

In the web-enhancement for Counter Collection: Summoned Creatures, I statted up armadillos, and gave the option of using advanced armadillo stats for a pangolin.

If you stat 'em up, you need to add in the prehensile tail.

Hooray, a theory of kobolds that doesn't make them dragons! I'm tired of the dragon-kobold connection—the game took throw-away fluff comments of sorcerers possibly inheriting their powers from draconic ancestors and the fact that kobolds advocate that theory and basically made it fact.

Well, there's a secret about this.

The editors at WotC? All kobolds.

That's why we have Pun-pun, and why dragonwrought kobolds qualify for epic feats.

It's just the kind of tricky, out-of-the-box solution you'd expect from them

We have Pun-Pun because folks confuse templates with legitimate character generation choices.

And I've loved kobolds since the 1E Rogues Gallery, but 3E actually putting flesh on those bones has been a great change.

You don't need a template for pun-pun. It helps, but isn't essential

The same is true for being a kobold, really.
