Angus heeds Litrix's warning as he steps forward and brings his powerful claymore sword sword down on the evil creature in front of Caerth's horse. The blade hits the undead foe once, twice. "Foul creature!" The Northlander centaur brings his shield around to hit the undead creature in the head, but the thing manages to duck under Angus's shield. Aureus curses as her horse reins up and bolts away from the undead foe in front of her. She lets the horse flee. She keeps her focus on the creature threatening her as she steps towards Angus. She slashes out with her short sword but the evil foe easily parries the first strike with its own blade and evades the second strike. When Angus attacks the undead in front of it, Phar can hear the centaur's sword slicing through cloth but not flesh. The blade tears away part of the undead creature's garments and Phar can see that the creature is primarily bone with dried flesh barely hanging from its body. Phar recognized the undead as a skeleton, but these aren't normal skeletons. They are called brooding skeletons or sometimes just The Brood. These powerful skeletons are drawn to places that radiate evil and they are vulnerable to bludgeoning weapons that are magical. They also cannot be turned. Wracking his brain, Phar tries to remember if he's read anything about these types of undead or in one of the books in the Boots' Sanctum during the short time at the ruins. When he sees the glowing eyes of the undead creatures, and their strange attire -- patchwork armour and wrappings around the creatures' arms and legs, he remembers a story he read in one of the books in Lady Pendour's small library in the manor back in Carnell.
That story, no more like a legend (or an old rumour, depending on the telling), goes into an ancient idea of a portal hidden in the wilderness that leads to a place called Ghostmoon Manor. The text in the book notes that the portal is supposedly located in a wooded setting and is guarded by a powerful group of brooding skeletons. The portal was created by a powerful fey mage named Tazryl whose has its origin in a place called the Mival Valley.
