Am I wrong, or is there no lance in 4e?

Has anyone else statted one up yet?
Since Andy Collins (in his "convert PHB classes" article) mentioned that the Ranger would get his pets in the upcoming Martial Power sourcebook, I wouldn't be too surprised if we got some lances and horses in that book, too.

For the time being, a spear will do.

You're not going blind, the lance is gone. It's always presented a problem, since it's obviuosly a very long weapon that should grant reach, but archetypically used in combination with a shield, making it one-handed. While that's exactly how it worked in 3.0, and there was an obscure one-handed reach weapon in the DMG in 3.5, somewhere along the line, the idea of a one-handed reach weapon has become anathema. Even with reach being a much more minor advantage in 4e, I suspect they'll be hesitant to give us a simple, straightforward one-handed (versatile) reach lance.

There was a lance in some of the preview materials we saw from the DDI. It did 1d20 damage. I can only assume that it was a "mounted combat only" weapon, given that damage die.

Its how I'd do a lance. Make it incredibly powerful. Then tell you that you can only use it to make mounted charge attacks. If you want to do anything else, you have to drop it and fight with a different weapon. That way, characters who have specialized in a particular weapon will still want to use a lance when its allowable and when it makes the most sense (cavalry charges), but they won't focus on it and end up with characters who can't use their primary weapon choice in 95% of the fights they get into.

lance

I kind of liked the song sung by the singing sword in Elaine Cunningham's Elfsong book. Very double-entendre heavy:

"There was a knight who longed to wield
A more impressive lance
To carry into battle
And to aid him in romance."

Chorus:
"Hey there! Ho there!
A lesson's here for you:
Be careful what you ask for,
For your wishes might come true."

"A wizard overheard the knight
And granted his request.
The knight at first was overjoyed
To see how he was blessed."

"The knight went to a party
With his weapon thus enhanced.
The lance made dining difficult
And tripped him when he danced."

"The next day at the tournament,
He won the jousting meets,
For all who faced his fearsome lance
Fell laughing from their seats."

there is another verse or two but I don't have the most recent Best of the Realms.

just let people use pole arms one handed while mounted if they have the mounted combat feat.
Long spear is usually the direct analogue to the Lance in the ruleset so that one should be the "Lance". Also, since I have not looked at the powers much, I'd recommend the "polearm" designation not be applicable when one handing the longspear since NO one handed weapon gets that descriptor.

As to what damage bonus on a charge is fair, the warhorse normally adds a 5 point damage bonus on a charge, requiring 3rd level and a feat. SO care has to be taken not to set the damage bonus too low or high.

yeah I don't think it needs any additional bonus. I'd much rather see feats, paragon paths or powers that made it the viable choice, just like daggers for rogues.
