[Lankhmar] This is the obligatory LANKHMAR conversion thread

After having played every edition in the Lankhmar universe, it seems that the only conversion that is ever necessary is this:

Light magic is "Divine". Dark magic is "Arcane".

Classically, prior editions required increased casting times (really long casting times). I hated this idea from the beginning (and I'm pretty much sure everyone else did too, and it pretty much doomed what probably could have been massive sales of this fun world.

Here's what I would do:
* Instead of making being a spellcaster entirely un-fun, how about another option:
** Simply require that wizards make an Arcana (5e) check at -1 per level of the spell.
** If you fail, the spell doesn't go off. You don't lose the spell, but may try again next round.
** You can make your Arcana checks all in the same round to determine what round it goes off on (and can change your mind), or you can have the surprise of making the check each round.

Anyways, what would you all propose for this?

I don't know 5E, but it seems to me that one of the limiting factors of the thief character was that he couldn't cast spells like the Grey Mouser until he became a higher level and could use scrolls. 1st edition didn't really help matters, since the Grey Mouser felt like he should be more of a fighter/magic-user/rogue, and humans could not multi-class. The Grey Mouser works better in 3.5 as a low level wizard with some higher fighter and rogue class levels mixed in.

Ritual magic also seemed important in the Lankhmar series. And there is another question on how you use the Gods of Lankhmar versus the Gods in Lankhmar...

Basically, the D&D system requires a lot of twisting to make Lankhmar fit.
