Lankhmar

It's been a while since I've read 'em, but didn't our heroes meet some Ice Gnomes when they climbed Stardock?

I don't remember the ice gnomes either. However the travail of climbing Stardock has always stuck with me. I especially liked how Fafhrd left Mouser on the side of the cliff after he met the Invisible woman. :)

And (spoiler ahead) ....

When Mouser fell off the mountain, Fafhrd followed on that invisible flying ray and saw him falling head first, with his arms in a diving pose. Even when the odds seemed impossible the Mouser was hoping he'd survive by landing in some water. Those guys were die-hard. :)

For those who are interested, here are a few threads on the Mongoose boards on using Conan for Lankhmar. I started working on this with Iron Chef several months ago (Obviously, Iron Chef did most of the work), but life got in the way. Please feel free to use them as you will.

And here's a general interest thread:

I found 2 copies of his books in a 2nd hand bookstore today (well actually far more than two, but two that are situated in Lankhmar.

I'm really looking forward to the books! I am halfway through the 1st story, and I love it allready! :D

Great links to the mongoose board by the way!!

Ummm....

What about reading the novels?

Lankhmar is based on the works of Fritz Leiber (I think issuees between Leiber or his estate & TSR is waht killed that world, btw). The books are all great & can tell you a lot about the worlds. They are well written and very good books.

As far as I know, however, none of his works are in print currently. (Check Amazon to be sure). I personnaly have a quartet of books released by White Wolf several years ago the combined all (or most) ofthe Fafrhd & Gray Mouser stories.

They are:
Ill Met in Lankhmar (Paperback & hardcover).
Lean Times in Lankhmar (paperback & HC)
Return to Lankhmar (Paperback & HC)
Farewell to Lankhmar (I only got the HC, not sure if it ever got released in paperback).

You might still be able to get some of these,

I read some of these as a kid. They were always one of my favorite fantasy series. I'll have to find some of the 1e stuff. I remember the Gods in Demigods and Deities. Issk of the Jug etc..

Why does the 1e version have such a better reputation than the 2e version? The link to Krieg's comparison now goes to a 404 page.

Finally, as for the books, you can get ALL of Leiber's Nehwon stories in two volumes: "The First Book of Lankhmar," and "The Second Book of Lankhmar," published as part of the "Fantasy Masterworks" series by Gollancz. They may be hard to get outside of the UK (though I found mine in a small fantasy and science fiction bookshop in San Francisco).

You can get the from my new favorite bookstore: The Book Depository - Homepage - Cheap books with free delivery worldwide "all books for all people"

edit: Hmm I just put in the link and it inserted the silly advertising msg.. werid...
They don't charge international shipping!!! :) about 10$ US each

The 1e Deities & Demigods (aka Legends & Lore) has a great Nehwon section, with monsters, gods and npcs. Great wilderness encounters tables and some general background info. Much of it is duplicative, if in a slightly different form, as the stuff in the 1e softcover.

Heck, I'm happy to see it back. I really wish Mongoose had gone with Conan rules for their Lankhmar book, which I have yet to pick up. One day, maybe.
