Large creatures in dungeons / monster PCs

Unless you play in predominantly outdoor settings (not the norm for many campaigns) the size and the inherent problems of a centaur moving up stairs and ladders, etc are pretty extreme.

Considering all but the largest staircases are going to be 5' wide at maximum and might not be able to be traversed by a horse and making a quick entrance or exit from a subterrean locale is going to require spells to accomplish easily.

The problem is less that he's large and more than he doesn't have reach and doesn't have legs suitable for climbing. I have a werebear PC I just started (we started at level 10), and he does fine in hybrid form. I'd say the centaur PC probably needs to rethink his character. Centaurs just aren't appropriate for dungeon crawls. A druid in my campaign has a hard enough time dragging his wolf companion around, and he's only medium sized.

We don't really do constant dungeon crawls, the campaign is more outside then inside, so to say. It's just when inside, the character really faces some problems (like climbing, etc.). :)

And since we have house ruled Polymorph to personal, I cannot change him to a more suitable form, if needed, as well (got a nice wand of polymorph :D). ;)

I don't want to sound harsh, but maybe the player could have thought twice before playing a centaur :) The DM has to sometimes arrange the adventures to suit the character, after all the whole point of playing is having fun, but what if a player wanted to play something like a whale? He couldn't complain afterwards if the adventure is not in the ocean...

Beside jokes, in general a player shouldn't be penalized too much for his choices, but sometimes he just is. At the same time, characters oriented to mounted combat or who have animal companions always face problems when going into dungeons.

I second my previous suggestion of making larger dungeons however ;)

Yeah Large characters are fun because they have reach even if narrow spaces are a bummer

The Centaur isn't restricted because he's large, he's restricted because he's a centaur

1. Get a long spear (reach weapons are essential if your large)
2. Get real feet (that horse body is the real kicker:P pun intended)

come to think of it do Centaur hooves count as weapons?

Don't worry, he won't be overly penalized for picking such an unusual race.

I just noticed how much trouble are caused by those little differences, altho the horse body surely causes more of them than the size. :)
