Large Monster using Medium Weapon?

Large creature wielding a greatspear (normally a two-handed weapon for a Medium creature, deals 2d6 dam).

Am I correct in assuming that the Large creature can wield the greatspear in one hand, although the weapon only inflicts its normal damage (2d6)?

Yup, and the Large critter takes a -2 penalty on the attack.

Why the penalty?

It is an innapropriately sized weapon. If you use a weapon intended for another size, you take a -2 penalty per size difference. So a Medium creature wielding a Huge creature's weapon suffers a -4.

And the weapon changes size categories, so that dagger is a two-handed weapon for the Medium character. And, if it were a longsword for a Huge character the Medium character couldn't even wield it, since it would be bigger than two-handed.
