Large Race

I was thinking of ways to make a Large race balanced...

I was thinking of...
+2 to Str and Con
can use Large weapons

racial encounter powers
add +1 reach

Any thoughts?

I'd recommend against allowing large sized PCs the use of large weapons. The reason is that it's a potent feature that scales with the number of weapon dice powers grant. One possible solution is to remove weapon damage scaling based on size entirely. If you feel that large size merits increased damage, you could grant the race a flat damage bonus (+1 or +2) as a racial feature.

I think reach could be fine even as a persistent racial feature. Threatening reach is, of course, another matter entirely. I could see threatening reach as a racial encounter though.

Large size PCs do have a few other issues you need to be aware of as well.

Close bursts are larger (because the origin space is larger). One solution is to require large PCs to select one of their squares as the origin square, but in this case their close bursts are effectively smaller than those of a medium PC. Another approach would be to allow them to choose an equivalent number of adjacent squares to what a medium PC would get (8 in the case of a close burst 1), though I could imagine that slowing down the turn.

Squeezing might also be more of an issue for large PCs, though that mainly depends on the DM.

hmmm... I didn't think of bursts...

Here's a revision

+2 to Str and Con
+1 square to reach
+2 to damage to melee attacks
+2 to Endurance and Intimidation
Bursts must go in a single direction, filling 8 squares around them.
(Maybe a paragon or epic feat can change this to a true close burst)

racial encounter power
add +1 square to threatening reach for one turn

I think AC gets targeted more often than non-AC defenses, so only do it if you feel the race needs a bit of a boost. There's no official precedent for it, and I haven't had a chance to give it much thought, but my guess is it wouldn't be overpowered.

It'd feel more on par if you gave him a +1 racial bonus to damage rolls and let him get his full bursts instead. By allowing it that way, you don't shoe-horn the race into only melee classes. You could call it something akin to Overwhelming Presence. As to the bursts, this does mean he gets extra squares from such powers, but he also has a couple penalties for being large that he suffers to balance this, notably the issue of squeezing when inside most normal buildings/settings.

Have you considered using the new race format and giving him an optional third stat? Depending on if the race is typically Stronger vs tougher, you could make Str/Con primary and the other a choice with something else like Wisdom if the race is unusually perceptive or Dexterity if they're surprisingly Spry for their large size.

I wanted a brutish, ogre-ish type race, so I didn't want to have a bonus to Wis or Dex... which is why I was considering having a +1 to AC to provide a bonus to another defense.

Understandable; those were just suggestions; you could keep them as is and fit them in okay. The main tenant was to try and get the race out of being almost forced as a melee class to be viable. Though, I guess they'd be a decent fit for runepriest, con-lock, or summoner druids, so that helps them fill out roles and power sources.

I think reach and a larger space are HUGE advantages.

I wouldn't give a large race anything else, other than stat bonuses, and given how burly a defender with these characteristics would be, I'd go ahead and leave it +2 str, +2 con, and the other defenses be damned.

And I'd still be quite worried that it would be overpowered.
