Large US Game Conventions

Thanks for the help

I just wanted to say thanks for your responses, especially from Mixmaster, but also from everyone. Now I have a better idea of what's out there, and I can start to make plans to attend some of them in the future. Thanks again!

What a coincidence! I actually attended Genghis Con this year as well. While I did have fun, I was mildly disappointed. The last time I attended was Genghis Con 2001, and it was much bigger then. I would hazard to guess that it was at least twice the size just 4 years ago, both in terms of total attendees and in the number of vendors. While I will probably attend it again in the future, I wanted to look into possibly trying some of the larger cons.

I suspect some of the decline could be posted to 9/11 - IIRC, GenghisCon 2002 was really hurt by that... not to mention Tacticon 2001.

But although there could have been more vendors then, I think we've got some better ones now, especially with all of the companies showing, instead of just various game stores.

Marcon here in columbus at the end of may I think. It is more sci fi fantasy, then gaming minis, cards...but all that is there. This con represents more different groups of people that fall under the sci fi/fantasy unbrella that I've seen.

Alot of cons were hit by that.... ours', Dragoncon..... you name it, attendence went down.

Pentacon (held the first weekend in November) is Indiana's oldest (and used to be largest until Gen Con moved here) gaming convention held in Fort Wayne consistently draws between 800-1000 in attendance. This year's guest of honor will be Todd Macaffrey (sp?) of the Dragonriders of Pern series.

"Playoff Round" (Open for discussion)
DragonCon (9/2 to 5) in GA
DunDraCon in CA
MegaCon in FL

While I love DragonCon, I would say that if you are mainly just looking for RPG/CCG etc. related stuff that one may disappoint. Yeah there are pleanty of games to play, and if thats all you want to do then its fine, but if you want to go to panels or other kinds of events at a Con then DragonCon isn't really your best bet. We tend to go cause we are into comics, sci fi, pop culture stuff too. So YMMV.

MegaCon was good this past weekend, it's usually last weekend in Feb.

Very Anime heavy, but with card flopping and rpging getting some showing.

Comics are big there as well. Number of artists show up, as well as Troma
and the people dressed up in costumes. Costumes are big there.
