D&D 5E (2014) Laser Gopher Burrow rifle

Trying to see if this works. This is a weapon I've been stewing on for the Hodgepocalypse

and yes, I do have stats for the Laser Gopher. :D

Laser Gopher Burrow rifle

Wondrous item (weapon), rare (requires attunement)
Weapon Type:
Counts as a rifle or musket variant (martial ranged weapon)
Damage: 2d8 radiant damage (range 120/360 ft.)
Weight: 12 lb.
Property: Two-handed, reload 1 (psychic recharge)

Description

A relic of prairie ingenuity, this weapon fuses wildlife and weaponry into one improbable ecosystem. The Burrow rifle houses a docile yet potent laser gopher, a creature whose photokinetic glands have been conditioned to align perfectly with the barrel’s bore. The stock has been hollowed and padded with moss, hay, and old cloth, forming a cozy nest for the gopher to live in symbiosis with its wielder.

When fed scraps, praise, or occasional back scratches, the gopher naps quietly in its mossy home. When danger arises, it opens its eyes—and channels a focused beam of radiant energy straight through the rifle’s barrel. The result is a shriek of light and ozone, a smell of burned grass, and usually one less problem downrange.

Game Mechanics

Laser Beam (Ranged Weapon Attack):

Make a ranged attack using your Dexterity modifier + your proficiency bonus.
Hit: 2d8 radiant damage.
Critical (natural 20): The gopher’s beam intensifies—add an extra 2d8 radiant damage, and the target is blinded until the end of your next turn.

Recharge:
The gopher must rest after each shot. It recharges after you use a Bonus Action to feed or soothe it (DC 10 Animal Handling check). On a failure, it refuses to fire that round and emits a faint, indignant squeak.

Overheat:
If you fire it twice in the same turn (through Extra Attack or Action Surge), roll a d6. On a 1, the gopher becomes irritated and retreats into its nest, refusing to fire again for 1 minute unless calmed (DC 15 Animal Handling or Persuasion).

Psychic Bond:
While attuned, you can telepathically sense the gopher’s mood (content, hungry, tired, angry). Once per long rest, you can cast Guiding Bolt through the rifle, dealing 4d6 radiant damage on a hit.

Sentience:
The gopher has Int 5, Wis 12, Cha 8 and understands the emotions of its wielder. It’s friendly but moody, and will refuse to fire at children, small animals, or friendly targets. Treat it as a semi-sentient companion for roleplay purposes.
